Description : Description of the July 4 celebration in Alcona.
Transcription : ALCONA BUDGETT. Celebration Notes and General News Items. Alcona, July 8.--The celebration on the 4th passed off quietly and the young folks enjoyed themselves and a good many of the old folks tripped the light fantastic toe. In the evening the dancers adjourned to Knights of Malta Hall and danced till morning. There were present quite a number from the lumber woods. Jos. Hasty and lady, Wm. Johnston and lady, James Johnston and lady, from Black River, James Scott and a host of others. Joseph Evens and lady Mrs. Elizabeth Carle, John Gray and daughter and others from Harrisville. Mrs. McLellan was also on the ground. The dinner was all that could be expected and there was enough to suffice the wants of all present and as many more, as shown by the basketsful that were taken off the ground. There was one prominent farmer who did not celebrate, as he said it was a good time to cut Canada thistles as the sign was in the head. He must be related to the old woman that always put up her stove in a certain phase of the moon so that it would draw well. I overheard two old stumbling blacks of the church lamenting that they would like to have a wee drop to arouse their enthusiasm. We will call one of them Away Over Yonder, and the other, I'll See You Later, Be Gob. The Knights of Malta reaped a good harvest from their picnic.
