"According to some authorities, the Mulford family of East Hampton
originated in the village of South Molton, Devonshire, England, where the
name is also spelled Molford. Others are equally positive that the two
brothers John and William Mulford who were among the first settlers here,
were the sons of Thomas and Sarah Southcott Mulford of Maidstone in Kent.
At a recent date there were Mulfords still living in both localities. The
name of Mulford is found in every State in the Union. Probably not all of
these are descended from the first settlers of East Hampton, though many
young Mulfords left East Hampton in the 18th century and settled in
different parts of New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Connecticut,
and their descendants scattered from there.
The two brothers came to Southampton, Long Island in 1643 from Salem
Mass. According to p. 29, Vol. 1 of the Southampton Town Records, John
Mulford was granted two acres of land there on May 28, 1643 and on p. 55
it is recorded he sold his house in Southampton on Feb. 8, 1648, and in
that or the following year was one of the nine persons who settled East
Hampton; his younger brother William soon following him there. The name
of John Mulford appears many times in the council minutes of Connecticut,
of which Colony eastern Long Island became a part. He was commissioned a
Judge in 1674. In Town affairs, keeping peace with the Indians, and
representing the eastern towns in Hartford, and afterward in New York, he
was prominent until his death in 1686.
When the eastern end of Long Island was first settled, a patent on
certain lands was issued to the colonists direct by the reigning King of
England; and under that charter the colonists instituted a government;
the first Republic on American soil, it might be called. The chief
magistrate was constituted the common court. A second court was
constituted by a jury of twelve freeholders, and a third, the highest
judiciary, was a general court, presided over by the magistrate, but in
which the whole body of freeholders was constituted a jury. From 1650 to
1654, the name of John Mulford, and his only, appears as chief magistrate
of this little republic, which had full treaty power with the Indians.
A small book of great charm and humor has been written by a Mulford,
and largely about the Mulfords: "An East Hampton Childhood," told by Mary
Esther Mulford Miller [ E.H. Star Press, 1938; 44 pages; illustrated ].
It has for a cover Childe Hassam's etching: "The Heart of East Hampton"
showing the John Henry Mulford house [ now owned by the E. H. Historical
Society ], the roof of "Home, Sweet Home," the old mill, and the tower of
St. Luke's Episcopal Church in the background. Commenting on the
character family, Mrs. Miller said: "Once a Mulford, always a Mulford,
the family saying goes. the women may marry but they stay Mulfords to the
third and fourth generation, and the wives of the Mulford men, whatever
their background, are soon absorbed by the Mulford clan---although my
mother always said it was rather difficult to change a Hedges"."

"The marriage clerk was a meek-looking young man named Clarence E.
Mulford. He sold his first western story, a 6,000 word short story called
[ "The Fight at Buckskin" ], to 'Outing Magazine' in 1907 for $90, and it
was included, along with other bloody tales which followed, in a first
book called 'Bar-20'. Its handsome straight man was a stalwart cowhand
named Buck Peters, but Mulford soon lavished his interest on Buck's
sidekick, a foul-mouthed, whiskey drinking, tobacco-stained onery galoot
who spit a lot and walked on a gimpy leg, [ hop-a-long ], which he got
from a wound in a local gunfight.
Hopalong, a near illiterate who spoke only in 'shore,' 'git,' 'purty' and
'plum-loco' style Western lingo, was vaguely on the side of Good but
managed to reduce the population, redskin or white, by anywhere from two
to 12 souls per episode. He could drop a man while swigging whiskey raw
from a bottle and pause after 'ventilatin' another varmit to pinpoint a
green fly on a nearby wall with a stream of tobacco juice.
For years Mulford ground out this sort of thing, until there were 18
Hopalong volumes. They prospered, although mildly by modern standards,
until Mulford was able, in the mid-20s, to make his first trip West. The
books were translated into several foreign languages.
When Movie Producer Harry ['Pop'] Sherman and actor William Boyd put it
on the big screen, it was an entirely different Hopalong from Mulford's
plug-ugly. Only the first six pictures were based even remotely on the
original yarns and Boyd stopped limping after the first one. [ The wound
healed, the second film explained. ] The dirty
shirt and galluses were replaced by a snappy black outfit with white
piping. Hopalong gave up cut plug and wholesale killing; now he spent all
his time saving the widow's ranch from rustlers and the crooks, out of
the goodness of his heart. He was no shiftless cowpoke but a substantial,
grammatical rancher trying to improve the community. There was always a
hell-bent for leather chase in the last reel, but Hopalong now often only
captured the bad men and killed nobody, after which he might just
possibly have a quick sarsaparilla. Mulford's reaction to what had been
done to his fictional creation was something less than joy. It is said
that upon seeing the first Hopalong Casidy film at the local movie
theater, Mulford passed out in the middle and had to be revived with
smelling salts. After watching the well scrubbed
sarsaparilla drinker in a few films, Mulford was unimpressed and never
went back. In 1926 he moved to Fryeburg, Maine and was visited there by
William Boyd in 1950. Clarence had an eight year old grandson at that
time, named Bruce Perkins."
"Life Magazine" June 12, 1950 and "They
Went Thataway" by James Horwitz 1976
I was told that the phrase "head em off at the pass", was
coined in Hopalong Cassidy.

From the 1880 Census of Wisconsin, Adams County, Springfield TWP,
June 24th. It stated that William could read and write and occupation was
a Farmer. William was 38 at the time of the census. That would make his
birth date around 1842. The census also stated that he was born in New
York. From the picture of the headstone that Aunt Anne sent me it looked
like he died in 1918. Both of Williams parents were born in New York.
William's wife Elizabeth was 35 at the time of the 1880 census.
This would make her birth year around 1845 and this also looked the same
on the headstone from the picture that Anne sent me. The 1880 census also
stated that both of Elizabeth and her parents were born in England.
August 21, 1996 I was at the LDS. I came across Wisconsin Marriages
pre 1907. Fiche # 6331479 , fiche 77. It had William Ketcham married May
1872 in Adams County, Vol 02, Page 0040. County YB ADA, Vol M sequence
02072. I was so thrilled to find this date. It had people listed
seperately without their spouse. I Looked for an Elizabeth Cowing but did
not find one. This will need more investigation before this date stands.

Homer may have lived in Kansas for a while or maybe just a visit. I
have a picture of Homer that states it was made in Kansas. ( I need to
check that 1900 census.

I found on the 1880 Soundex in Christian County, Finley
TWP(township), Missouri there was a John Thompson 31 years of age and
born in Kentucky.
John's wife was Lidia A. and 29 years old and born in Missouri. Their
children included a son, James Thompson 6 years old born in Missouri, A
daughter Maggie E., 3 years old and born in Missouri and a daughter,
Martha J. one month old born in May of 1880. This Census was done on the
2nd and 3rd day of June. The Emunerater was a James R. Bell. Vol. 8 , E D
10, Sheet ,and line 43.
Why I believe this to be Janie's family is because her father was
born in Kentucky , mother Missouri, a brother named James and in her
scrap book she has a picture of a headstone that states Maggie E. , wife
of George Hooper. The baby's name was Martha J. Could this middle name be
Janie and she did not go by Martha. ( I did find out from Robert Atkins,
cousin to my mother and grandson of Janie Thompson Atkins, that Janie's
first name was indeed Martha. ) Christian County, Green County, Webester
County are all close to each other.

I found in the library at the Oklahoma Historical building a book
called Records Of Christian County, Missouri. On Page 30 it had the
marriage record of a John Thompson and a Lidia A. Enis on December 10,
1872 by Tho. Hanks M. G. In the same book on page ( ? ) I found a Will
of David Lay of Christian County, Missouri.

Will wr. 25 February 1879
Prob. 22 April 1879
Wit: Thomas Hanks and L. H. Smith
Exec. Thomas Hanks

Heirs John and Lydia Thompson to in herit
everything if they take care of me for the rest of my life.

( this was found in the Will Book AB on page 6 )

When Janie (Thompson) Atkins passed away she left a scrap book
underneath her house which was found by a grandson, Charles G. Atkins.
In the scrap book were memories of Janies with some old pictures, cards,
letters.
In Janie's scrap book she had a picture of John Thompson (her
father), Russell Thompson(John's brother), and Jim Thompson (John's
brother).she had written under the picture that the picture was made
during one of Uncle Russells visits to Missouri at Uncle Jim's house.
Inez Thompson was married on this day. Uncle Russell was a conductor on
railroad out of Louisville for 57 years. He went to work on the road as
breakman at the age of 17 on the 17day of the month. He retired on the
17th day of the month at the age of 77 years. My father was a Civil war
Soldier. He was in actual battle twice. In prison hunted once by blood
hounds. Uncle Jim was too young. He was a farmer living near Palmetto.
My mother is Constance Louise Atkins. Her father was Dr. James
Albert Atkins. His parents were Dr. William Arthur Atkins and Janie
Thompson. My Mother was not very close to her grandmother Janie Thompson
in fact at first I don't think she knew her last name was once Thompson.
This was not out of lack of love but just the way the Atkins are. My
mother's Cousin Robert Atkins and his family actually lived with Janie
for quite a few years in Rogersville during the depression. It has been
through Robert that I really feel like I got to know Janie Thompson the
person. All through Janie's scrapbook her friends stated how much they
loved her. One friend had written her a poem and a song. She must have
truely been a very warm loving person.
I'll give you a little of what I know and a lot of what I don't know.
When Janie was a child her mother passed away. Her father, John Thompson
was unable to care for the children and farmed them out to other
families. Robert Atkins told me that Janie being a girl could not help on
the farm like a older boy or younger man. Janie was sent to live the
Estes.(William S. and Elizabeth E. Estes) Janie became very attached to
the Estes and always kept in touch with them and their children. In fact
Janie called them Mother and Father Estes. Janie took care of mother
Estes her last years like a daughter would.
I had all these pictures and names but nothing to go by. Robert
Atkins knew very little of Janie's family. I've just kind of been
pieceing things along the way and a little educated guess now and then. I
'll try to show proof or least why I have come to some of my conclusions.

On July 21, 1996 Robert Atkins called to let me know that Charles
Atkins, his brother stated that Janie's father John Thompson is burried
at John's Cemetery, Ash Grove, Green County, Missouri. Ash Grove is North
West of Springfield, Missouri. Ash Grove is pretty close to the border of
Dade County also.

On September 9, 1996 I received in the mail from the Missouri
Department Of Health Janie's Death certificate. It stated that Janies
mother's name was Ludy Lay??????????The information was given by Glen
Atkins. I have so many places where it states her name was Lidia A. Maybe
someone misspelled the name. Janie's mother died when she was a young
child, maybe somehow the name was mistaken. I'll just have to do some
more research and bear in mind that her name may not be Lidia. I do see
how an " I " and an " u " could easily be mistaken for each other, but
Enis and Lay???? If Glen was very upset at the time and he gave her name
as Ludy and or stated A. ( being her middle name which may be mistaken
for the name Lay.)
The man that left a will to Lidia and John was a David Lay. Was this
her father or maybe a stepfather. This would explain the name difference.
I need to check out the Missouri Census 1860 and 1870 for a David Lay and
see if I see Lidia there.

On November 20, 1996 at the LDS on North 63rd in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

When looking back on the Kentucky Census it seemed like I had his
family because his mother's name was Elizabeth and father's name was
Ephram, and his two brothers were there, but Johns birthday just was not
right. I knew if I went by the date on the 1880 Missouri Soundex for
Christian County it would have made John very young for the Civil War.
When Bobby Atkins, my mother's cousin told me that John was buried in Ash
Grove at John's Cemetery. I ordered some films at the LDS and found
John's Cemetery with John Thompson buried their, but with no date. John
did have a headstone that stated company B, 12th Kentucky INf. Next to
John was a Delila N. Thompson Born 1861 and died 1947. I took a chance
that this may be another wife since Lydia died when Janie was young.
On January 8, 1997 I went to the Historical building in OKC and
looked on the 1900 Missouri soundex and found John H. Married to a Delila
with some children in Greene County. ( I may add that Greene Co. and
Christian County are right next to each other and Rogersville is in both.)

on May 12, 1997 I was emailed from Jenilyn Marshall from Chicago,
Illinois.
stated that Squire married the sister of her Great Grandfather.

" Mary had four brothers and no sisters, and I believe was the fourth
oldest our of th five children Squire and Mary lived in Watson, I
believe, and had several Children. In later life mary had to be
institutionalized in Kalamazoo for some sort of mental illness. In the
U.S. census in 1900 or 1910 she was enumerated the mental institution,
and Squire was enumerated at home with all of the children. In about
1912(?), her brother William E. Marshall (my great-grand father wrote in
a daybook that she "don't know her own friends, poor girl." I have not
yet tried to trace Squire and Mary any further than this, but will at
some time in the future. I hope this is useful to you. If you would like
me to send more detailed information, please drop me an e-note."
