    Enlisted as a Private in Company K, 9th New Jersey Infantry Regiment on 15 October 1861. Received a disability discharge on 15 September 1863 in Beaufort, NC with the rank of Sergeant. Source: Register of Officers and Men of New Jersey in the Civil War 1861-65. (NJ Roster) Published in 1876

    REUBEN CHESTER: Mustered in October 15, 1861, Trenton, NJ, discharged for disability, September 15, 1863, disability, at Beaufort, North Carolina. This regiment was mainly in the North Carolina campaign. They fought the Battle of Roanoke Island, NC, Battle of New Berne, NC, Battle of Cold Harbor, crossed the Appomattox into Petersburg, VA., to guard railroads. One of their most gallant fights was crossing a burning bridge while facing the enemy at Rawle's Mill.
