Obit: Hannah Magdeline Ditch was born in Fredericksburg, Maryland, January 11, 1858, and departed this life at Bedford, Iowa, April 26, 1923, age 65 years, 3 months and 15 days. When a small child, she with her parents moved to Chicago and later to Phillipsburg, Kansas. On September 2, 1873, she was united in marriage to August Ernest and in 1876 they came to Taylor County, Iowa, locating on a farm in Jackson Township, and where on August 2, 1906, the husband went to his reward. For six years Mrs. Ernest continued to keep up her home but the children having moved to themselves, she yielded to their solicitations and went to make her home with her daughter, Mrs. J. [ohn] L. Larison. It was here that death found her. Nine children remain to mourn this mother. They are Mrs. J. [ohn] L. Larison [Rose], Mrs. F. [rancis] M. [arion] Brown [Mary Alice], Frank L., Mrs. Roy Spurgeon [Maud], Fred E., Willis C., Herman B., Mrs. Mart Reece [Lula] and Glen E. All with the exception of Frank were permitted to be at the bedside of their mother during her last hours on earth. During the pastorship of Rev. Ware, Mrs. Ernest united with the Presbyterian Church but later after the Forest Grove Church was erected near her home, she was baptized in this faith by the Rev. A. L. Jones. Although of late years on account of ill health she was unable to attend services, she was at all times and places a true, practical Christian, loving home and neighbors and always ready to lend a helping hand in time of need.
Through all her afflictions none ever heard a word of complaint, nothing but patience and a trust that "He who doeth all things well would in His own time call her to rest." With these words, "Thy will, Oh Lord, Be Done," she sank into a quiet sleep from which she never rallied. Funeral services were held at the Forest Grove Church Saturday afternoon in charge of Rev. Fletcher and interment made in the cemetery there. (Bedford Free Press, May 3, 1923)

Glen Elmer Ernest Last Rites Were Held October 17
Funeral services for Glen Elmer Ernest, 88, of Bedford, were held October 17 in Shum-Novinger Funeral Home in Bedford, conducted by Rev. Carl Cummings. Mr. Ernest died October 13 in Rosary Hospital in Corning. American Legion Post 164 conducted military honors at Fairview Cemetery, Bedford.
Glen Elmer Ernest, son of August and Hannah Magdeline Dietch Ernest, was born in Jackson Township, Forest Grove community, in Taylor County, Iowa, April 20, 1893.
He lived in Jackson Township and grew to maturity in the Forest Grove community where he attended the public school and the Forest Grove Church.
Glen Ernest was united in marriage to Harriette Roxanna Lee on January 26, 1922 and they lived in the Bedford community all their married life. To this union two children were born: one son, Cecil, died in infancy; a son, Elvin and daughter-in-law, Donnabelle Ernest, survive and one sister Lulu Reece; also nieces; nephews; other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Harriette and the infant son, Cecil; his parents, three sisters and four brothers.
Mr. Ernest was engaged in farming and lived on the same land he and Harriette had purchased in 1935. His son, Elvin, joined him in partnership farming in 1948.
He was united in marriage to Laurel Worley Churchill on February 8, 1941. She made a home for Glen and Elvin until she died April 26, 1956.
During World War I, Mr. Ernest served his country and had overseas duty in France and Germany. He was in the Medical Corps.
Since his wife Laurelís death, he had lived close to his son and daughter-in-law, Donnabelle, who welcomed him in their home and cared for him. He remained active and never missed a day that he was not out helping to do what he could. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.
He was a good husband and father and will be missed by his family and neighbors.

Funeral services for Mrs. Roy (Maude) Spurgeon, 92, of Bedford, were held October 15 at Shum-Novinger Funeral Home here with Carl Cummings officiating. Mrs. Spurgeon died October 13, 1971 at Pearl Terrace Manor in Bedford. Interment was at Fairview Cemetery.
Maude Emma Ernest, daughter of August and Hannah [Ditch] Ernest, was born in Taylor County, Iowa January 3, 1879.
On December 31, 1903, she was united in marriage to Roy Spurgeon, who passed away June 18, 1965. To them was born one daughter, Leila, now Mrs. Karl Zral of White Rock, B. C., Canada.
Maude attended school at Forest Grove and lived in this community until young womanhood. She accepted Christ as her Savior and united with the Presbyterian Church during the pastorate of Rev. E. N. Ware.
In 1912 the family moved to Canada and returned to Bedford in 1930 to make their home.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three brothers and one sister.
Left to cherish fond memories ae the daughter, Leila and her husband Karl; two granddaughters, Dorothy and her husband Gerry MacDonald, Judy and her husband, David Parish; four great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren, all living in Canada; two sisters, [Mary] Alice Brown and Lula Reece of Bedford; two brothers, Herman Ernest of Clarinda and Glen Ernest of Bedford; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
She was a kind and loving wife, mother, sister and friend, and she will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her.

W. C. Ernest Died At RochesterW. C. Ernest, farmer living in the East Mission community, died at St. Mary's hospital in Rochester, Minn., Sunday. He was taken by plane to the Mayo clinic on Wednesday and the body was returned by plane after his death on Sunday.
Funeral services were held at the Wetmore Funeral Home Tuesday afternoon, July 26, conducted by Rev. Fred H. Cowles of the Baptist church. Burial [was] in Fairview cemetery.
Willis Carl Ernest was born at Bedford, Taylor County, Iowa, on Feb. 22, 1883, and died at the age of 72 years, five months, two days. He was a son of August and Hannah [Ditch] Ernest and lived his entire life in Taylor County.
On December 15, 1912, he was married to Georgia Dean Slauson and to them one son was born.
He is survived by his wife Georgia; the son, Willis Dean; his daughter-in-law, Darline [Opal Hughes]; one granddaughter, Joyce Ann.
Also by four brothers, Frank Ernest of Denver, Colo., Fred Ernest of Conway, Glen Ernest of Bedford, Herman Ernest of Clarinda; four sisters, Mrs. Rose Larison, Mrs. Allie Brown, Mrs. Roy Spurgeon of Bedford, Mrs. Loula Reece of Denver, Colo.

Funeral services for Mrs. Marion (Mary Alice) Brown, 96, of Bedford, held June 21 at Shum-Novinger Funeral Home in Bedford, were conducted by Mr. Carl Cummings. Mrs. Brown died at her home near Bedford June 19, 1972. Interment was at Forest Grove Cemetery, Taylor County.
Mary Alice Ernest, daughter of August and Hannah Dietsch Ernest, was born near Marshalltown, Iowa, September 8, 1875.
She moved with her parents to Taylor County, Iowa, when she was a small girl and the family located on a farm in Jackson Township in the Forest Grove area where she attended the public school and grew to adulthood.
In 1895 she was united in marriage to Francis Marion Brown, at the home of the brideís parents. They moved to the farm in Jackson Township and with the exception of four years she has continued to reside on the same farm. To them were born five children to bless this home. Mr. Brown passed away in 1950.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two daughters, Jean who died in 1918 and Ferne who died in 1929, two sisters, Rose Larison and Maude Spurgeon, three brothers, Frank, Fred, and Willis Ernest.
Left to cherish memories of her good life are three children: Bertha Risser Rowe, Harold Brown and his wife Marvel, and Dean Brown; five grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; one sister, Loula Reece of Mt. Ayr, Iowa, and two brothers, Herman Ernest of Clarinda, Iowa, and Glen Ernest of Bedford; nieces, nephews; other relatives and many friends.
She united with the Methodist Church early in her youth.
She loved her family, her home, and her friends, and she will be sadly missed by all who knew her.

Funeral services for Mrs. John (Rose) Larison, 92, of Bedford, were held Jan. 13, at the Bedford Baptist Church at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Ollie Odle officiating. Mrs. Larison died at Thogmartin Care and Keep Home in Bedford, Jan. 9. Interment was at Fairview Cemetery, Bedford. Rose Rebecca Larison, daughter of August and Hannah [Ditch] Ernest, was born in Phillipsburg, Kansas, July 23, 1874. She was the oldest in a family of nine children. When a little over a year old she was brought to Taylor County and lived southeast of Bedford in the Forest Grove community where she attended school and lived until a young woman. On Jan. 3, 1894, she was married to John I. Larison and for several years they lived on a farm east of Bedford. They left the farm in 1920 and came to Bedford where she lived the rest of her life. They had no children of their own but they took two children, John Buell, deceased, and Edith Pickering, to love and raise as their own. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, John, three brothers, and the foster son. She is survived by her daughter, Edith Pickering, Bedford; three sisters, Alice Brown, Maude Spurgeon and Loula Reece, all of Bedford; two brothers, Herman Ernest, Clarinda, and Glen Ernest, Bedford; two grandchildren; two great grandchildren; one great great grandson; and a host of other relatives and friends. She belonged to the Rebekah Lodge and Wild Rose Club. In 1894 she was baptized into the Baptist church where she spent her life serving her Lord in the various duties of the church. She taught a Sunday school class for many years and was the backbone of the Women's Missionary Society. She loved her church and attended every Sunday until about six months ago, when her health kept her from going. Besides being a wonderful, loving mother and grandmother, she was a devoted wife, a kind neighbor, and a wonderful friend, but best of all she was an inspiring Christian to everyone who met her, and she will be sadly missed by all who knew her. Zarnikow, Ruby RisserRuby R. Zarnikow was born June 12, 1924 the daughter of the late Abbot and Bertha (Brown) Risser in Taylor county, IA, Jackson Township. She passed from this life on Friday, March 30, 2007 at University Hospitals in Iowa City, IA, having reached the age of 82 years, 9 months and 18 days.

Funeral services for Ruby R. Zarnikow, 82, Wilton, were held Monday, April 2, 2007 at Bentley Funeral Home in Wilton, with the Pastor Rodney Underwood officiating. Burial was in the Oakdale cemetery. Mrs. Zarnikow died March 30 at University hospital in Iowa City. The daughter of Abbot and Bertha Brown Risser, she was born June 12, 1924. She was raised on a farm in Taylor county and attended a one room school near Bedford. She graduated from Bedford high school in 1941. She married Werner E. Zarnikow of Buffalo, N.Y. on Dec. 20, 1947 in Ames, while they were students at Iowa State University. During World War II she worked in Washington, D.C. and Detroit, Mich. for the FBI. The couple raised their family in West Des Moines and also lived in Tennessee, California and Arizona, before moving to Wilton. She was a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran church in Durant. She enjoyed gardening, especially flowers, sewing and quilting. In earlier years she was a 4-H leader and taught quilting. Mrs. Zarnikow is survived by 5 children
