In 1793 under a state law a specific tax was laid on the various trades and professions upon which roll Colonel Aaron Barlow entered his name and was taxed five dollars He built a large colonial house in West Redding with great double stone chimneys and it long roof reaching nearly to the ground in the rear and it was a long time a family tradition that General Putnam often rested in the kitchen herein whilst the circle of intimates quaffed their cider and smoked their pipes Colonel Barlow kept a diary of personal experiences while on the campaign in northern New York during the expedition of Generals Schuyler and Montgomery in the fall of 1 75 for the capture of Montreal and Quebec At this time he was second sergeant of the Tenth Company in the Fifth Regiment of the Connecticut Troops commanded by Colonel David Waterbury Jr Esq His regiment was a part of the quota of 30,000 men raised in New England to aid in the siege of Boston and also participate with the New York troops in the expedition against Canada Colonel Barlow's company was recruited largely in Redding and was commanded by Captain Zalmon Read It departed June 2 1775 reaching Norwalk the next day and Stamford the day after On July igth they pitched tents at Harlem and embarked for Albany July 26th There is an amusing entry for the date August 23d I went to the city to see some thieves tried for their life 3 negroes Dick a boy about 14 years old one negro condemned to be hanged one to be whipt 39 stripes on the naked body rest one week and receive 39 more to lie in prison one month and then be banished The other negro and boy receive 39 apiece On August 26th he left Albany reaching Half Moon and on the 29th was at Fort Edward on the 3Oth at Fort George set out on board the Battow for Ticonderoga on August 3ist and against a head wind reached Sabbath Day Point the same day some twenty miles September ist arrived at Ticonderoga and at Crown Point September 5th Colonel Aaron Barlow was married by Rev Nathaniel Bartlett at Redding Connecticut pastor of the Congregational church December 27 1772 to Rebecca Sanford Children i Elnathan died young 2 Elanthan died in the war of 1812 3 Samuel baptized at Redding May 4 1777 by Rev Nathaniel Bartlett 4 Stephen became a lawyer in Ohio 5 Daniel lived and died at Redding 6 Aaron died at sea 7 Esther died of yellow fever at Norfolk 8 Joel died at Redding 9 Rebecca lived and died at Ballston New York 10 Thomas adopted by his uncle Joel Barlow and called by him after Thomas Paine educated in France and became that uncle's private secretary

Joel s of Samuel Barlow 2 born at Redding 24 March 1754 first entered Dartmouth College in 1774 or 5 but graduated with high honors at Yale in 1778 in the class with Hon Zepheniah Swift Uriah Tracy Noah Webster Oliver & Alexander Wolcott & other distinguished men at which time he delivered a creditable poem entitled The Prospect of Peace He early showed talent of a superior quality & became a marked favorite with Dr Trumbull & Dr Dwight He was an intimate college friend of Thomas Paine who probably had not at that time become imbued with French infidelity He studied law & divinity for a short time & after being licensed as a Congregational minister he became a Chaplain in the army of the Revolution until the close of the war In 1783 he opened a law office at Hartford & upon Elisha Babcock removing his printing press from Springfield to Hartford he entered into partnership with him in editing The American Mercury In 1785 he was chosen by the General Association of the Congregational Church to revise the Psalms of Dr Watts In 1787 he published his Vision of Columbus but his popular poem entitled Hasty Pudding written in France in 1793 exhibited a more decided poetical talent In 1788 he went to England as agent for the Sciota Land Company & then to France where he became interested in the politics of the country & giving up his agency joined the Girondists In 1791 he returned to England & there causing offence by his publications he returned to France in 1792 In 1795 he was appointed by General Washington Consul to Algiers where he effected a treaty which liberated Americans held as slaves by the Dey He also succeeded in a treaty at Tripoli by which the American prisoners there were redeemed In 1797 he returned to Paris & in 1805 to the United States & settled in the vicinity of Georgetown In 1808 he published the great poem of his life The Columbiad which was republished in 1811 in London He was diligently engaged in writing a history of the United States in 1812 when he was appointed by General Washington Minister Plenipotentiary to France Unfortunately while on his way to Wilna to confer with the Emperor Napoleon he contracted a severe cold & died from inflammation of the lungs at Zarwanica a small village in Poland 2 Oct 1812 He m Ruth a d of Michael Baldwin of New Haven who with her sister Clarissa accompanied her husband to France Clarissa m Col Bomford of the US Army Both ladies were sisters of the Hon Henry Baldwin of Pittsburg Penn & probably half sisters of the Hon Abraham Baldwin of Georgia Hinman's Puritan Settlers Vol 1 pp 113 131
