1. | Daniel Rufus Conley was born on 26 Dec 1826 in Burke County, North Carolina; died on 02 Jul 1915; was buried in Antioch Cemetery, Ivy Log, Union County, Georgia. Notes:
There were several Conley/Connelly families living in Burke County,
North Carolina in the early 1800's, but at this time we are not aware of
which, if any, of these Conleys are the ancestors of the following Conley
family. We do know that there were two brothres and possibly three, that
came to Union County, Georgia before the Civil War.

When I went over to meet my father's cousin, Shirley Woolf
Ryland and to get some information about the Sharps she had an original
letter that was written to my great great grandmother, Julia Goodrum
Conley form her husband Daniel Rufus Conley during the Civil War. (this
is my great great grandmother on my father's father's mother's side of
the family. Shirley read the letter out loud and I taped it and
transcribed it later. The letter was very faded and Shirley had a hard
time reading it. Since she had had this letter since a Child and read it
many times I thought it might be better if she read it instead of me. My
visit with Shirley was on April 1995. I may add that it was a pleasure to
meet her. She gave me a apron that belonged to my great grandmother. When
I touch the Apron that Nancy Conley had worn gives me a very warm feeling.
Thunderbolt Battle, July 12, 1863
Dear Julia,
Owning to your very long silence I have written you two letters
since I have received one from you, but I thought it my duty to write to
you since yours may have been misplaced and not come on account of
neligence.
The past month we have nothing else on nerves on battle after
battle on every side. Our regiment has marching orders several times in
the last two weeks to Charleston. Furloughs have been stoped and I do not
know when they will open again. I Cannot tell when I will be Able to get
one as time stands now.
I Suppose you have heard of our surrender of our nobel Little
Vicksburge with 21,000 of our gallent troops under ( something Government
) Grant Pendleton that was on the 4th of the month.
I have not been very well for some time past my bowels have
been somewhat danger and our rations are thin on account of such of it
has reduced me down to nothing only skin and bones and also I am very
feeble indeed, We have a great deal of sickness in our company and
regiment. We have had two deaths recently in our company and one on the
4th, Sargent T. M. Henderson and the other was Stricklin. We have a great
many at homes and still in hospitals. Our Company is over one hundred
strong and we only have some forty men for duty which makes it very heavy
on what few is left.
If you see any of our company that is coming back to camp soon
I want you to be certain and send them to send some gloves to me that is
if you have them made. I need them to wear on dress parade.
I will say to you dear Julia that I become perfectly worn out
in camp.
I expect from the intense heat.
I expect Lieutenant ( Gray or Bray ) Will be in Calhoun in a
short time. I did want to go when he did but I am fearful I will not get
off. The Captain has not done me justice by no means and a great many men
fuloughs, He used a great deal of particulity with the men. He has his
favorite pets and he gave them all the privileges and the battalion has
to do as they can.
I am very anxious to hear from you and my dear little ladies,
Sally and Ida. It has been so long since I heard from you. I am fearful
some of you are sick and I learned that there is a great deal of sickness
in that section. I want you to take special care of yourself and my dear
little Sally and Ida for you may rest asure that as soon as I can get a
furlough and keep well that I will come to spend a few pleasent days with
you and the little ladies. It is very strange indeed the longer I stay
away from my dear little interesting family the more I become
disatisfied, If it was not for you and my little ladies I could not
content myself much better just to think of the hardships of men have
been under in the camps and also be deprived almost certainly of ever
going to see his family. It is very discouraging to think that I have
such limited privileges anywhere without a pass from our officers.
I suppose that there is some excitement in your county on
account of brass following back in Tennessee.
I am in hopes that men start having been lying at home with
with been uncomfortable to go into the service and _______ some hardships
as well as that has been the camps for months. Be certain and write me
soon and give me all the piticulars.
From your affectionate husband,
Most respectfully
D. R. Conley to my Dear
Julia
P. S. Say to Ida I would like to hear from her.

On August 7, 1996 I sent a letter to Civil War Descendants Society
seeking proof that Daniel Rufus Conley was a confederate soldier. I
received a answer from them on September 17, 1996.
Daniel Rufus Conley was a sergeant of Company I in the 63rd Infantry
Confederate States of America.
Mrs Mulford,
Thank you for your order. The 63rd Georgia Infantry was a most
commendable military-unit in the Southern Cause. The Society's
Certificates of Recognition are also popular across the United States as
a means of memeoralizing A Civil War ancestor-soldier.

On The 1900 Georgia Census, Enumerated June 12, 1900
Enumerator, Sallie R. Ervins
Union County, Blairsville, Georgia
It stated that Julia and Daniel had been married for 43 years,
Daniel was a farmer, his father and mother were both born in North
Carolina. his Farm Schedule was 88 ( what ever that means).
It stated that Julia had 7 children and 6 are living. I never did
find Sally on the 1870 or 1880 Census.
I took Josiah E. to be Eugene from the earlier census because the
birth dates were the same and one more child would give Julia 8 instead
of seven like the 1900 census said. Josiah was listed as single.
Ida 's husband must have died because it shows her as single and
living with her parents at the age of 42.

In the spring or summer of 96 I found a Charles Conley in
Blairsville, Georgia, I called him and he stated that Daniel Rufus Conley
was his Great Grandfather. He knew very little of th family but stated he
was interested. I sent him my information of the family. Months later I
heard no answer and gave him a call. He stated he had had health problems
and did hope someone would carry on the family genealogy. I told him I
was sorry and hope he would get better. I was very disapointed with this
but decided to plug along on my own.
