Jim met Cora as she was cooking in a hotel at Grand Marais, Mi. They married in Grand Marais and their first two children, Roy and James, were born in Grand Marais, Mi..

In 1904 Jim went back to Harrisville and stayed with his uncle Nicholas.

Cora went down to the train station to meet him when she was pregnant with Forest Lee Barber. There was no one there to meet her so she sat down on a timber pile and began to cry. Forest (Bub) was born in Harrisville in Sep of 1904. Also, Mary Louise was born in Harrisville in July 1906.

Jim was going to build a shingle mill.

Jim worked at Gilleses shingle mill; (go to the Watson Hill outside Newberry and turn right.)

Moved into his dad's house

The family was extremely hard-up. Once while Jim was down in the lower Peninsula working with his uncle Nicholas, Cora sent her oldest boy, James Earl, to the grocery store to get a loaf of bread on credit until Jim returned from the lower pennisula. The store owner would'nt give it to him so Cora and her kids went and searched garbage cans for something to eat.

At night Cora would have to leave a coal-oil lantern burning on the table becasue the rats would jump up onto the table in search of food.

Moved to Dollarville. Stayed in the South Shore Cedar Co. boarding house for two weeks then moved to Dollarville, Mi. Jim worked different jobs; i.e. locomotive fireman; engineer, cemetery sextant in Forest Home Cemetery, lumber camps, drove truck for the state of Mich., etc. over the next dozen or so years.

Jim would come home durnk and be unable to climb the stairs to the house porch. He told Cora that the reason he couldn't climb the stairs was because of his rhumetism.

1921
Moved up the hill next to Edna just west of Newberry. Lived in a converted schoolhouse.

Note: Jim had a cousin William Barber who was a lawyer in Alpena. He always referred to him as that crooked lawyer.

Just prior to Christmas Jim was drinking and speeding up Dollarville Road. He was pulled over by the police and taken to jail. There he remained until Christmas day when a local lawyer in Newberry was able to get him out of jail.

Jim found out that George Clark the proprietor of a local store in Dollarville had turned him in to the police and was the cause of his arrest. Jim harbored ill feelings toward George Clark long after that time. In 1936, Jim was down visiting his daughter Annabell at her home in Dollarville, Mi. He and Annabell's husbnd Tarzen where sitting there drinking beer. After downing several beers Jim found out that Tarzen had purchased the beer at George Clark's store. He jumped up, ran out into the yard and stuck his finger down his throat to throw up the beer that Tarzen purchased from George Clark..

Mrs. Cook always seemed stuck up to Jim's daughter Annabell. She was a real little, homely women. Annabell later learned that the reason she would not acknowledge Annabell is because she was having an affair with Jim Barber. Annabell overheard her mother asking her father if he was going to her funeral and he said no. Jim had lots of affairs when he was younger. Cora was sickly and couldn't do anything about it. One affair he had was with Cora's sister Edna. Edna's husband committed suicide and she eventually moved in with Jim and Cora. She was living with them when Edna was born. Edna's daughter asked Annabell if she saw her mother come out of Jimmy's bedroom. Cora was down in lower Michigan visiting relatives at the time.

Moonshine

Jim used a clothes boiler to make his mooneshine in his kitchen. When he was ready to brew he would close all the windows and doors and had his son Earl out to keep people away. He would then have his dad help bottle and cap it. James Earl, who just returned from service in WWI, would put on his uniform and march back and forth with his rifle as though he were a military sentry.

The police arrested Jim for making moonshine and he was sent to Marquette prison for a short time.

Jim made and sold moonshine during prohibtion. He would take his daughter Annabell, a suitcase full of moonshine and travel to uptown Newberry where he would go to the local hotel and pretend he was from out of town. While there, he would unload his moonshine wares.

Jim would send the kids up to Lavender's Bakery to purchase the yeast for his moonshine. After brewing the potions of moonshine, he would carry it into the post office, put it down and do whatever business he had to do there. Then he would pick it up and take it to McLains in the Long Branch saloon. That is where he would sell it.

Jim found an easy way to get rid of the mash from his moonshine business. He would dig a hole in the pen where he kept his pigs and bury the mash. This was supposedly a safe place. What he didn't calculate for was that the pigs would root up the mash and eat it. This they did and they became gloriously drunk. Cora not knowing that the pigs had consummed the mash became hysterical because she thought all the pigs were sick and dying.

He worked at a small park at East Lake as an attendant. Often women would come by and have him take their picture. He would only shoot their legs. The next year they would return and show him the picture.

Grace Barber Haedke, whose name was synonymous with beauty writing in Detroit throughout the 1940s and 50s, died Saturday at Bon Secours Hospital in Gross Pointe at the age of 83.
As Free Press beauty writer in an era when the women's pages were critical to a newspaper's reputation, she was courted by such fashion queens as Elizabeth Arden, Helena Rubenstein and Rose Laird -- who became personal friends --- and her advice was sought by thousands of women readers.
She took her work seriously, and her refusal to endorse cosmetic products without pre- testing them won her the respect of colleagues and industry giants.
Charles of the Ritz once told her: "if only the cosmetics industry would give out awards to the best beauty reporter of the year, I know you would walk away with the medals."
Miss Barber, as she was known to her readers, was proud of her work and her place in a male-dominated profession. Upon retirement in 1961 she said: "Mine has been a women's job if ever there was such a thing... What man could test colors of makeup, treatment, creams and lotions, hair and hand preparation? Or pass along the word about the newest advance in beauty shops, hair-dressing techniques, figure-shaping salons?"
Friends and co-workers remembered her Sunday for her personal kindness, her meticulousness, and her professionalism.
"She had a delightful personality. She was a warm, a very giving person," recalled Jon Buechel, fashion artist for the Free Press and a friend to Miss Barber.
Laurena Pringle Kilpatrick, former Free Press women's editor with whom Miss Barber once shared a "What's Proper in Detroit?" column, said: "She had a tremendous following because people trusted her so and trusted her judgement. She wrote with authority and in a very simple style."
Kay Savage Kennedy, a food writer who used to sit next to Miss Barber, called her both "charming" and a stickler for accuracy.
"When the cosmetic people would come in to tell her about their new products, she wouldn't just take their word for it. She had to have some proof that this cream did such and such a thing..."
She was born in 1896 in Alpena, where she once worked as a teacher. Dissatisfied with teaching, she left her job to study business at Cleary College in Ypsilanti. She called her hiring by the Free Press after graduation in 1918 "unbelievable luck."
She began as an errand girl and secretary, wrote women's page features, edited the now defunct Girls and Boys section of the paper, and in 1940 was assigned to write a beauty advice column. Fifteen years later she was answering 50,000 letters and phone calls a year from readers seeking help.
Miss Barber was a member of the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary Chapter No 5 and a member of the St. Columbia Episcopal Church in Detroit.
Service will be 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Verheyden Funeral Home, 16300 Mack, Gross Pointe Park. Burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery in Alpena.

Obit: Edwin N. Holmes Funeral services were held Monday, November 30, 1987, for Edwin N. Holmes, 78, of Harrisville, who died November 24 in St. Petersburg, Florida. Mr. Holmes was born September 13, 1909, in Harrisville where he lived all of his life. He was a Mason and a member of United Methodist Church, Harrisville. His first wife, Florence, preceded him in death April 8, 1972. Surviving are his wife, Jeannette; three daughters, Helen Holmes of Ann Arbor, Dorothy Masich of East Tawas and Myrtle Gilgallon of Clinton; a son, George, of Alpena; a step-son, Bill Conklin of Westland; a step-daughter, Kay Morley of Livonia; several grandchildren; three brothers, Herbert and Kenneth of Harrisville, and Riby of Fowlerville; and a sister, Ida McGregor of Holt. The Rev. William Stone officiated at the services held at Gillies Funeral Home, Lincoln. Burial was in Mt. Joy Cemetery, Haynes Township.

(Papa) Jim was born to James and Hattie (Church) Edgar while they were residing in Ann Arbor, MI. He lived in Wells, MI during his early years, and later moved to Woodside, MI. While living in Woodside, Joe and Lorna Clenford assisted him as foster parents. Jim attended local schools. James was employed as a welder in Detroit, Hancock, and Milwaukee. Upon retirement, he moved to Lake
Linden with his wife Dorothy. As a soldier in the U.S. Army, he served his country during WW II, and
participated in the Normandy Invasion. Jim was a member of the Williams- Giroux Post 90 American Legion of Lake Linden and the Lake Linden United Methodist Church. He was an avid outdoorsman, and a man of artistic talents. His home projects attest to his natural abilities. He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Dorothy Edgar of Lake Linden; four sons, James (Katherine) of Glendale Heights, IL, Gary of
Port Hueneme, CA, Glen(Mary) of Lancaster, OH, and David of Dollar Bay. He has 11 grandchildren
11 great-grandchildren, two sisters Mildred Nuoffer of Denedin, FL and Elaine Colthrop of Kalamazoo, MI.
In addition to his parents, three brothers and two sisters preceded Jim in death.

Elaine (Colthrop) Cramer - Of Mattawan, Eaton Rapids and Lansing, MI, In the presence of her husband and family, Elaine (Colthorp) Cramer went home to be with her savior on Wednesday, July 24, 2002. Born Elaine Joyce Edgar on December 30, 1928 in Wells, MI, near Escanaba, Elaine lived most of her life in Lansing and Eaton Rapids. On December 1, 2001, Elaine married Gerry Cramer of Mattawan, MI, and had a lovely 8-month honeymoon. Prior to that, married to Ted Colthorp, she raised 7 children and started the business Tops in Toys Home Parties. Elaine's faith in the Lord gave her strong moral values, which she imparted to her children. These same values made it easy for her to reach out in love to other women with children, who became a part of the Tops in Toys Fun Family. Starting in the family basement in 1960, Tops in Toys moved to Eaton Rapids and eventually the business expanded over 4 states. Surviving are her husband, Gerald Cramer of Mattawan, Sister Mildred (Millie) Nuoffer, Sister-Niece Barbara Hernly both of Eaton Rapids, 7 Children and 16 Grandchildren. She also leaves 2 Great Grandchildren. Elaine has been a lifelong member of the Community of Christ Church. A Memorial Service in celebration of her life and successes is planned for Tuesday, July 30th, 2002 at 6:00pm at the Community of Christ Church, 1514 W. Miller Rd., Lansing, MI 48911. A
