- Merritt was missing in action in the Korean War in 1950 / 1951 and I was later adopted by Elaine's sister, Dorothy (Chester) Stewart (technically my aunt) and Ray Stewart. I had lived with them since the age of two. I grew up in Round Lake, Illinois, and moved to Mundelein, graduating in 1964. Six months after graduation, I got married to a Navy guy, Dave Matthews, and moved to Millington, Tennessee. About a year later, Dave was stationed aboard the USS Saratoga out of Mayport, Florida, and I moved down there. My oldest daughter, Debbie, was just a little tyke. In 1966 my folks brought me back to Illinois just in time to give birth to my son in Waukegan, Illinois. Dave was still out on ship.
