Obituary: (Saturday May 6, 1905 - The Gallatin News) Death at Fountain Head James M. Jones, well known blacksmith and farmer of Fountain Head, died Friday night of last week. The deceased is survived by his wife and several children, all of them being about grown. Mr. Jones was a native of Jackson County and had resided at Fountain Head for five or six years. He was well liked by the people of this community.

He died intestate before May 1903, leaving land along Shakerag Branch which was located in the 11th Civil District of Jackson County. It was also stated that he had 10 children and it named all of them and told which ones were deceased. It also named all the children of his deceased children. It also named C. A. Jones and her husband F. M. Jones, Mancal Jones and Earnie Jones, but did notstate there relationship to James Jones the deceased. His wife Lucinda was trying to receive the homestead and her rights of dower, is why they were in court. (Jackson County, Tennessee Court Minutes film #985337)His tombstone says he died 4 June 1902, but no birth date and says to our grandparents.

According to the five censuses, 1850-1880 and 1900, James and Lucinda Jones had thirteen children. James Jones' middle name may have been Wilson instead of Williams.However, in the Lucinda Jones' Petition for Homestead and Dower, only ten children are mentioned as James' heirs at law: "The said James Jones decd had the following lawful children, being ten in all, which gives to each heir or child of James Jones one tenth part of said land, and to each set of children of deceased sons or daughters of James Jones decd, one tenth part of said land, and own it as follows,Complainant Wade Jones owns & is entitled to one tenth, defendant Rece Jones one tenth.Dock Jones one tenth Catharine Jones one tenth, Maggie Montgomery, a minor & only child of Elijah Jones a deceased son of James Jones one tenth. Marion Allen, only son & minor of Fannie Allen decd daughter of James Jones one tenth. Nettie Spurlock one tenth. Thomas Jones & Maggie Jones, minors & children of Julia Jones a deceased daughter of James Jones deceased, one tenth between them being one twentieth to each. John Jones a son of James Jones deceased is dead & left Sidney T. Jones Jane Jones Will Jones M. W. Jones, Claudy Jones Milton Jones and James Jones, entitled to one tenth between them being one seventieth each. Peggy Mahaney a deceased daughter of James Jones, left the following children who are entitled to one tenth to be divided among them to wit, Josie Gipson, Etta Bishop, Rebecca Allen & Allice Allen one fortieth each."Nothing is mentioned about James Jones, Fannie Josie Jones, and Louisa Kate Jones. Had they died without having any children? According to the 1900 Census, Lucinda said that she only had eight children and six were living. She is not found in the 1910 Census. In the 1920 Census, the number of children is not listed.

Lucinda (daughter of William Billingsley and Feriby Brown) was born on 02 Jan 1832 in Jackson County, Tennessee; died on 16 Sep 1924 in Jackson County, Tennessee; was buried in New Salem Cemetery, Jackson County, Tennessee. Jones was deposed. He was asked if he knew whether Elias Jones was dead. He answered yes that he saw him buried, he died in Union county, Illinois 24 Sep 1850 and made his mark X. I am not sure and do not have proof yet that Lazarus is the father of the children I have listed for him. But he is living with Susannah in 1850 and John and Jad do not live to far away from him. It is just a maybe that Amassa, Elias, Jad, Byram, John, Susannah & Nancy are the children of Lazarus.There is a Lazarus Jones married to a Kessiah Spear from Pasquotank county, North Carolina on the IGI at the Salt Lake Family History Library. The ages would be right to be this Lazarus. I also found that he was born ca. 1763 on the IGI and that they were married 9 March 1787 in Pasquotank Co, NC. He should have been about 87 years old in 1850 instead of 77 years old if born in 1763. Also found that a Lazarus Jones served in the Revolutionary War from North Carolina pension #W26796. A Lazarus Spears born 29 Sep 1786 in Pasquotank county, North Carolina gave a statement that he knew that Lazarus Jones had served in the Revolutionary War. Lararus Spears had a brother namedJesse Spears who was born 23 Aug 1789 in Pasquotank county, North Carolina. Their father was Samuel Spears who was born ca. 1761 in Halifax county, North Carolina. Samuel maybe the brother to Kessiah Spears who married Lazarus Jones. I am going to send for the pension record and see what I can find. (1 Jan. 2000) I received the pension record for Lazarus Jones, 23 FEB 2000. Heis not the same Lazarus Jones who was in Jackson co, Tennessee. The Lazarus Jones who married Kessiah Spears died in 1814 or 1818 and his widow applied for a pension in 1842 in Macon Co, Illinois. I will need to keep looking.

According to Thomas Edward Jones Jr. a 5th great grandson of Lazarus the story goes that Lazarus came from Wales to South Carolina, moving later to Tennessee. Thomas e-mail address is ejones@net-serv.com He lives just outside Nashville (May 2000).

The Brown FamilyBy: Jimmie Brown AskewThomas Brown was born about 1773 in Fincastle, Virginia. He was married to Nancy Litton in 1795. They came to Jackson County about 1800. Jackson County was formed in 1801 and engulfed the area of what is now Clay County. Thomas bought 8,000 acres of land on the Dry Fork of Flynn's Creek where he lived. At this time Thomas and Nancy had four children who had been born in Fincastle, Virginia: Ferby, John "Jackie", Lockney, and Dudley. Henderson, Lucinda, and Jimmerson were born in Jackson County Tennessee on Dry Fork of the Flynn's Creek. Nancy died sometime after 1806. Thomas later married Elizabeth ? , who died after 1860. (Editor's note: It is believed Elizabeth was a Billingsley. See later notes.)Thomas divided his land among his children as they married. I am descended from one of his sons, Dudley Brown (1799-1891), whose log cabin still stands on a high hill on Dry Fork. It was built on a level piece of land on the crest of the hill. The narrow winding road leading to it snakes almost straight up to this flat land, and after walking only a few feet from the edge, nothing can be seen except the cabin, the sky, and the land surrounding it. One gets the feeling of being on top of the world. The cabin's in accessability kept it isolated for the last 160 years, which accounted in part for its amazing state of preservation. The original floor, mantel, and doors were still in good condition, but the top story (of the cabin) had been blown off, and a kitchen that had once been attached to one end of the cabin near the chimney, had been torn away. The logs of the house were secured with wooden pegs. There is a family cemetary, grown up with weeds in the back of the house with eight or ten graves marked with crude linestone rocks. (MARSH) BROWN, of the Nameless Community, he is 84 years old, and a Great Grandson of TOMMY BROWN and wife, and Grandson of JACKIE BROWN.Tommie Brown and wife (whose name is unknown to the Brown Family of today) came from "Ole Virginnie" in the early Pioneer days and settled on and around in the country from Dry Fork Creek of Flynn's Creek and south of the Bell Hill, later called Nameless Community, on a farm of some 6000-8000 acres. Mrs. BROWN (NANCY) died a few years after coming to this section, what is now Jackson County. They had four sons namely-DUDLEY BROWN, HENDERSON BROWN, JACKIE BROWN, and JIMMIE BROWN. The people realizing the need for a Church in the community, they decided to build a house and called it a free church for all Churches to use for worship. This house was located on the grounds where TOMMY BROWN lived for many years. And at that time his son lived there too. DUDLEY BROWN the eldest son, and brother, HENDERSON says, I will put up one side of the house, which he did of nice big logs, cut and hewn by himself. The community assisted with the completion of the house named for Uncle JIMMIE (JIMMERSON) BROWN and his sons, "BROWN'S CHAPEL".As the custom was in those days, there must be room near the church house to bury the dead. DUDLEY BROWN deeded the land for this purpose, known as "BROWN'S CHAPEL GRAVEYARD". The graveyard located on the east side of Dry Fork Creek of Flynn's Creek, and the church on the west side, and the same with the road. Now a gravel road.There are many graves here. Many soldiers of both Revolutionary and Civil War are buried here, grave on top of grave, as the early ones were un-marked. This BROWN's Chapel graveyard, located in the 11th Civil District of Jackson County, Tenn., on Dry Fork of Flynn's Creek. Out from Gainesboro 8 miles, west on Highway 53, to Fork of Creek School house, turn to the left, thence up Dry Fork Creek of Flynn's Creek, 4 miles. This farm is now owned by Sid Ragland, who lives some 200 yards South, on the right of the creek and road from the graveyard.1995- New evidence has been received confirming that THOMAS BROWN's second wife was Elizabeth Billingsley. (See Billingsleys Family in America) a book in the Jackson County Public Library. Also see notes of Elizabeth Billingsley1998-From Freddy Brown (Internet) claims to have seen a will of a John Brown in Montgomery Co., Va. that names Thomas Brown who married Nancy Litton as an hier. May be Thomas father.

But if John Litton's children are listed in the order of their birth, Nancy would have been born in the mid 1750's. That would make her almost 20 years older than her Husband.
