    (Medical):\par

His will was proven in Shrewsbury, Monmouth Co, NJ on 24 Aug 1684. He´uª0 ´uª0 named his´uª ´uªwife´uª0´uª ´uª0 and children in the will. His will is found in DOCUMENTS RELATING´uª0 ´uª0 TO´uª ´uªCOLONIAL´uª0´uª ´uª0 HISTORY OF THE STATE OF NEW JERSEY, 1664-1703, Vol. XXI, by´uª0 ´uª0´uª ´uªWilliam Nelson, 1899.´uª0 ´uª0´uª ´uªThe book contains wills, deeds, etc.
´uª0 The IGI file does not list him as a son of Francis Masters; however, circumstantial´uª0 ´uª0´uª ´uªevidence´uª0 ´uª0´uª ´uªindicates he was a son of Francis who was born in 1599. Francis, presumed´uª0 ´uª0´uª ´uªson of Francis, was´uª0 ´uª0´uª ´uªchristened on 19 Oct 1629 in Custon, Kent Co, Eng.
´uª0 Francis is the first documented Masters in this family. It is documented that he had a´uª0 ´uª0 ´uªson´uª0´uª ´uª0´uª ´uªClement. Clement is believed to be the father of Richard Masters since Richard´uª0 ´uª0´uª ´uªnamed a son´uª0 ´uª0´uª ´uªClement who migrated with other sons of Richard from NJ to PA. Records´uª0 ´uª0´uª ´uªon only two Clement´uª0´uª ´uª0 Masters have been found in New Jersey, which supports the´uª0 ´uª0´uª ´uªbelief that Richard named a son´uª0´uª ´uª0 after his father.
´uª0 A Francis Masters was born in Kent Co., England (IGI File) at about the right time to be´uª0 ´uª0´uª ´uªthis´uª0 ´uª0´uª ´uªFrancis Masters. A Francis Masters was transported to America from England by´uª0 ´uª0´uª ´uªFrancis´uª0 ´uª0´uª ´uªEngland and arrived in Virginia on 29 Sept 1664. He was one of twenty-six´uª0 ´uª0´uª ´uªpassengers on the´uª0 ´uª0´uª ´uªship (DOCUMENTS relating to COLONIAL HISTORY of the STATE´uª0 ´uª0´uª ´uªOF NEW JERSEY, Calendar´uª0´uª ´uª0 of Records in the Office of the Secretary of State 1664-1703,´uª0 ´uª0´uª ´uªVol. XXI, by William Nelson, 1899;´uª0´uª ´uª0 Patent Bk 5, . 402).
´uª0 England gained control of East Jersey at the time he arrived in America. Francis´uª0 ´uª0´uª ´uªapparently´uª0 ´uª0´uª ´uªmoved to East Jersey very soon after arriving. He took the oath of allegiance´uª0 ´uª0´uª ´uªto the King of´uª0 ´uª0´uª ´uªEngland and fidelity to the Lords Proprietors in 1668 in Monmouth´uª0 ´uª0´uª ´uªcounty. In 1670, Francis´uª0 ´uª0´uª ´uªwas one of many named as "township men" in Monmouth´uª0 ´uª0´uª ´uªcounty because they were´uª0 ´uª0´uª ´uªconsidered first purchasers of land and had been there for´uª0 ´uª0´uª ´uªsome years. The year was not´uª0 ´uª0´uª ´uªrecorded for the earliest land warrants issued in East´uª0 ´uª0´uª ´uªJersey, but many were issued in 1675 to´uª0 ´uª0´uª ´uªsettlers who had lived there for a number of´uª0 ´uª0´uª ´uªyears. Francis "Le Maistre" was issued a warrant´uª0 ´uª0´uª ´uªfor 240 acres in 1675. His son´uª0 ´uª0´uª ´uªClement and daughter Pauline were each given warrants for 120´uª0´uª ´uª0 acres the same year.´uª0 ´uª0´uª ´uª(HISTORY OF MONMOUTH AND OCEAN COUNTIES by Edwin Salter,´uª0 ´uª0´uª ´uª1890, pp. 28, 29,´uª0 ´uª0´uª ´uª360). William S. Horner stated in THIS OLD MONMOUTH COUNTY OF OURS´uª0´uª ´uª0 (p. 201)´uª0 ´uª0´uª ´uªthat early records show that Francis Le Maistre was known to have been of French´uª0 ´uª0´uª ´uªextraction. I do not believe he was from France and that Le Maistre was an error made´uª0 ´uª0 ´uªwhile´uª0´uª ´uª0´uª ´uªcopying the original record. I have a photo copy of Francis' will and looked at´uª0 ´uª0´uª ´uªmicrofilm copies of´uª0´uª ´uª0 the original in the New Jersey Archives, and they are very difficult´uª0 ´uª0´uª ´uªto read. The writing was´uª0´uª ´uª0 not easy to read, and the record is over 300 years old. If he´uª0 ´uª0´uª ´uªwere from France, I don't believe he´uª0´uª ´uª0 would be arriving in America on an English ship´uª0 ´uª0´uª ´uªand would not be taking an oath of allegiance´uª0´uª ´uª0 to the King of England. I also believe that´uª0 ´uª0´uª ´uª"Poolemah" is a copying error. The name is´uª0 ´uª0´uª ´uªPauline.
´uª0 Francis Masters's will was proven at Shrewsbury, Monmouth Co., NJ on 24 Aug 1684.´uª0 ´uª0 He´uª0´uª ´uª0´uª ´uªnamed his wife, Mary, and children Clement, Poolemah (Pauline), Mary and (John)´uª0 ´uª0 ´uªCobas´uª0´uª ´uª0´uª ´uªVogden. His wife was named as executor and Joseph Parker and Abiah Edwards´uª0 ´uª0´uª ´uªwere´uª0 ´uª0´uª ´uªwitnesses. The will was written on 24 July 1684. Letters of administration on the´uª0 ´uª0´uª ´uªestate were´uª0 ´uª0´uª ´uªgranted to Mary Masters and Clement Masters on 24 Aug 1684. Letters of´uª0 ´uª0´uª ´uªadministration were´uª0 ´uª0´uª ´uªgranted to Mary Masters of Shrewsbury and William Whitelock of´uª0 ´uª0´uª ´uªMiddletown the same day.
´uª0 Mary Masters, widow of Francis Masters, of Shrewsbury purchased 1/64 of 1/2 of 1/12´uª0 ´uª0´uª ´uªshares of´uª0´uª ´uª0 East Jersey from Robert Turner of Philadelphia on 22 July 1685. Robert´uª0 ´uª0´uª ´uªTurner had purchased´uª0´uª ´uª0 the shares from Thomas Rudyard on 23/24 Aug 1682. Mary sold´uª0 ´uª0´uª ´uª1/2 of the 1/64 of 1/24 shares of´uª0´uª ´uª0 East Jersey purchased from Robert Turner to "Garret´uª0 ´uª0´uª ´uªWale" (Jarrat Wall) on 27 Mar 1690. She´uª0´uª ´uª0 sold the other half to John Whitelock the same´uª0 ´uª0´uª ´uªday. Mary apparently was an astute business´uª0 ´uª0´uª ´uªlady and knew how to deal in land. While´uª0 ´uª0´uª ´uª1/64 of 1/2 of 1/12 of the land in East Jersey (eastern´uª0 ´uª0´uª ´uªpart of present New Jersey) may´uª0 ´uª0´uª ´uªnot sound like much land, it would be a sizable amount of´uª0 ´uª0´uª ´uªland. During this time in´uª0 ´uª0´uª ´uªour nations's history, what is now New Jersey was West Jersey and´uª0 ´uª0´uª ´uªEast Jersey. A line´uª0 ´uª0´uª ´uªgenerally drawn north-south through present-day New Jersey was the´uª0 ´uª0´uª ´uªboundary´uª0 ´uª0´uª ´uªbetween West Jersey and East Jersey.
