1871 census, Carlow Twp. shows him of French Presbyterian descent - Jim Richards.

We have no record for this family but in Nov 1990, a gr-grandson, Mr. Gary Holmes of Grand Blanc, Michigan phoned, followed by a letter, which was passed to a Barber relative. This past winter I wrote Mr. Holmes at the address on the letter but had no reply. He did state that the Death Certificate was filed in Alcona Co., Michigan, no other info - Jim Richards

Jim was very strict with his family. He would tell his family that they would do whatever they were told. Would hold his son Jim & not let him talk - Forest Lee Barber (grandson)

A Mr. Koon was stealing Jim's moonshine. Jim would see him sneaking down and take a drink on a continuing basis. Jim filled the bottle with kerosene instead of moonshine. When Mr. Koon sneaked down & took a big drink, he threw the bottle down & never stole any of Jim's moonshine again - Anabell Barber Richards

All the family was down to help Jim & Cora put in a new foundation for the house. Instead of digging, the men were down in in the cellar drinking & were getting quite drunk. Myoma, Forest Barber's wife, told some of the kids to go down and get one of the bottles. She pissed in the bottle and sent it back down with the kids. Orval Richards, the husband of Annabell Barber, grabbed that particular bottle, took a drink, spit it out and commented that "it tasted like warm piss" - James Robert Peake

    From Jim Richards notes:

"In the early 1830's, Eustache Barbary came to McNab Twp. with a Mr. Brent to take out lumber. According to legend, Eustache came to the home of James Headrick in Pakenham to sharpen his axe and there met 17 year old Isabella. It was "love at first sight" and although James Headrick didn't approve of such a marriage (French & RC), in time he realized the good qualities of Eustache, who was known as the "Peacemaker", a strong man who often "picked up an Indian who misbehaved at the Inn and set him where he pleased". Isabella's father stipulated that Eustache must be known as Hugh Barber and on Isabella's 18th birthday, Jan 23, 1835, the young couple were married by Rev. Mr. Fairbairn at Auld Kirk, her father having loaned them a jumper sleigh and team and a broadaxe as protection from the Indians (per legend). Also it is said that the local Indian women had made Isabella a wedding dress and a blue cape lined with white fabric. The church record shows the witnesses were brother James and Robert Yuill. Robert is thought to have married a Janet Headrick (not related to this family).

Land records for McNab Twp., Con.3, lot 3 have not been checked but this was the 1st home for the couple (near White Lake village). It was busy times. the 1851 census showed several children and men boarding at the house who were working for Mr. Barber in lumbering. In 1861 & 71, school taxes for Pakenham Twp. shows the family also lived "up the lake" at Con.1, lot 25E, Pakenham. Detailed maps will show a small island offshore named Barber Island. In time, Mr. & Mrs. Barber moved back to the 1st home in McNab Twp., no longer standing but near the house built by son William Barber for his family.

    Renfrew Mercury, 9 Nov 1900 - DIED:

"One of the oldest residents of McNab passed away on Saturday, Nov 3 after a very painful illness which was born with great patience. Funeral followed on Monday to the White Lake cemetery, attended by a large number of friends.

White Lake News, Nov 1900 - DIED:

"Mr. Eustache Barber, who died at White Lake on Nov. 3rd, aged 90 years, was born in St. Eustache Quebec in 1811. His parents came from Old France, likely under the name Barbeau. He came to McNab in 1833, engaged to one John Brill, who was lumbering in the township at the time, and was married to Isabella Headrick (eldest daughter of James Headrick, formerly of Lanark Twp.) in 1835. He leaves to mourn his departure a widow, 5 boys and 6 girls. He was a devoted husband and affectionate father.

From Rev. David Graham, Presbyterian Minister, White Lake & Burnstown, who attended him during his last illness:

"It is with great pleasure that I testify to the simple childlike faith in the Lord Jesus Christ of the late Mr. Barber during his last illness. In my conversations with him I found that he possessed a wonderful memory, a thoughful mind and an anxious spirit by which he was very soon able, after a simple and clear presentation to the plan of salvation, according to the New Testament teaching, to grasp the truth, namely that out of Christ, there's no salvation & that a new birth and faith in Jesus Christ, and not good works, was essential to salvation. His vision grew brighter and faith stronger as the end approached, and I am fully persuaded that he was enabled to pillow his dying head on the promises of Christ and to pass with the Redeemed into the Eternal City.

McNab Twp. records show that no break has yet occurred in the family of eleven children. Grandchildren living number 78 and 60 great grandchildren.
