He died intestate before May 1903, leaving land along Shakerag Branch which was located in the 11th Civil District of Jackson County. It was also stated that he had 10 children and it named all of them and told which ones were deceased. It also named all the children of his deceased children. It also named C. A. Jones and her husband F. M. Jones, Mancal Jones and Earnie Jones, but did not state there relationship to James Jones the deceased. His wife Lucinda was trying to receive the homestead and her rights of dower, is why they were in court. (Jackson County, Tennessee Court Minutes film #985337) His tombstone says he died 4 June 1902, but no birth date and says to our grandparents.

According to the five censuses, 1850-1880 and 1900, James and Lucinda Jones had thirteen children. James Jones' middle name may have been Wilson instead of Williams. However, in the Lucinda Jones' Petition for Homestead and Dower, only ten children are mentioned as James' heirs at law: "The said James Jones decd had the following lawful children, being ten in all, which gives to each heir or child of James Jones one tenth part of said land, and to each set of children of deceased sons or daughters of James Jones decd, one tenth part of said land, and own it as follows, Complainant Wade Jones owns & is entitled to one tenth, defendant Rece Jones one tenth. Nothing is mentioned about James Jones, Fannie Josie Jones, and Louisa Kate Jones. Had they died without having any children? According to the 1900 Census, Lucinda said that she only had eight children and six were living. She is not found in the 1910 Census. In the 1920 Census, the number of children is not listed.

    Notes:

Adaline is believed to be a Reeves based on the following facts: 1) In the 1850 Census, Nancy Jones is living with Henry Jones. The children in the household are Martha 21, Benjamin 17, Sabra 13, Rachel 9, and Susannah 6 Reeves. 2) In the 1860 Census, Nancy Reeves is living with Clinton and Adaline Jones. In this census, Nancy is 45 and Adaline is 28. Nancy is old enough to be Adaline's mother. The children are not listed in this census. 3) In the court case, Littleton Collier et al. vs. James Draper adm, James Draper is the administrator of the estate of James Pharris. There is a listing of notes of which Clinton Jones and Benjamin Reeves share the note. 4) Marion Richard Jones' death certificate (TN - 1944 - #24904) states that his mother was Adline Reeves. However, it also contains several errors. It states that his father was Frank Marion Jones (should be Clinton Jones). It also gives his birth year as 1887, but his age was 87 years old and he died in 1944. 5) Sidney Stanton Jones' death certificate (TN - 1935 - #25977) states that Adeline maiden name was Jenkins.

  1. 34.  Wiley C Harris was born about 1810; died before 1850 in Jackson County, Tennessee.

    Other Events:

    Notes:

Wiley C. Harris is assumed to be the husband of Sarah Harris based on the following facts: 1. Sarah Harris is listed in the Chancery Court Minutes as an heir of James Pharris. She is listed as the wife and widow of Wiley Harris. 2. In the 1850 Census, Sarah Harris is listed as having lived in the 15th Civil District. In the 1840 Census, the only Harris in the 15th Civil District is Willie C. Harris. Willie has 2 male children ages 5 and under, 1 male between 20 and 30, and 1 female between 15 and 20. In the 1850 Census, the two male children could be James, age 15, and Bryant, age 12. 3. Roane County, Tennessee Chancery Court Minutes, Roll #39, Book , Pages 725-729 Date: Dec 10, 1833 William C. Kington and wife Rhody, David Summer and wife Charlotte, Matthew Williams and wife Sally, and Isaac England and wife Rebecca VS David M. Rector On July 11, 1830, Martin Rector executed a deed to David M. Rector. On the same day, he executed a bill of sale to David M. and Polly Ann Rector for a Negro boy named Bob and a Negro woman named Lucinda. The Plaintiffs maintain that the Bank of Tennessee called in a loan to Martin Rector. In an effort to prevent the Bank from taking everything, he deeded all his lands and property to his children David and Polly Ann with the intent that when he settle with the Bank he would cancel the deed and the bill of sale. Before being able to do so, he fell sick. He called David to his bedside and requested that David produce the bill and deed so that he could cancel them, because Martin wanted all his children to inherit in his estate. Rather than producing the deed and bill, David took off. He returned a few hours before Martin died, but he never produced the bill and deed. The plaintiffs contend that they should rightfully share in the property. The Judge ruled in favor of David and Polly Ann. The plaintiffs planned to appeal the decision in the Supreme Court of Errors and Appeals in Knoxville on the 2nd Monday in July next (1834). Morgan County, Tennessee Deeds, Roll #18, Book C, Pages 104-106 Date: Apr 18, 1834 David M. Rector relinquishes his claim on the property of his father and gives it to his sister Polly Ann. The propery being one Negro woman Sindy and her two children Reuben and Eliza. Morgan County, Tennessee Deeds, Roll #18, Book C, Pages 121-125 Date: Jan 20, 1835 James Gilbreath (of Anderson County) had loaned David M. Rector $290 and $55.83. David bargained and sold 410 acres of land in Morgan County to James. The land was from what Martin sold to David and several Land Grants to David (January 31,1831 - Morgan County - Grants 16590, 16593, 16594, 16595, 16596). Morgan County, Tennessee Deeds, Roll #18, Book C, Pages 262-265 Date: Apr 4, 1837 David M. Rector sold four tracts of land in Morgan County to James Galbreath (of Anderson County). Morgan County, Tennessee Deeds, Roll #18, Book C, Pages 266-270 Date: Apr 4, 1837 David M. Rector sold five tracts of land in Morgan County to James Galbreath (of Anderson County). David Rector and his mother Sarah Rector moved to Jackson County, TN about 1841. [Sarah Rector v. Bryson Hood] Jackson County, Tennessee Chancert Court Minutes, Roll # , Volume A - 1840-1851, Page 95 Date: Mar 25, 1843; May Term Brison Hood VS Sarah Rector and David M. Rector AND David M. Rector VS Brison Hood Brison Hood gets the Negro Boy Charles and $200. Sarah and David M. Rector get the Negroes Cinda, Reuben, Eliza, & Tom. Sarah and David M. have to pay court costs. Sarah also releases and discharges said Brison from all and any obligation that he is under to support and entertain her. David M. Rector was a Private in Company B. 4th TN Infantry; Captain John Scantland; Colonel Richard Waterhouse. Brigade: TN Foot Volunteers. Mustered: October 7, 1847. Jackson County, Tennessee Chancery Court Loose Records Roll# 87 Johnson-Kieth, S. Vol. 1839-1915 Case: Leonidas Jones et al VS R. P. Brooks 1872-1874 David M. Rector was listed as a blacksmith. He was also a drunkard and spendthrift. David would go to town and buy himself a bottle of whiskey. He would then stay drunk for 3-4 days at a time. Afterwards, he would sober up and work properly for 3-4 weeks. Then he would do it again. David, mother Sarah, and wife Sarah all lived at a house owned by Richard Preston Brooks. The plaintiffs contend that while on a drunken spree, R. P. Brooks bought David the slaves for an extremely low price. The plaintiffs are David's two daughters Polly Ann Rector who married Leonidas Jones and Christine Rector who married Pinkney Gipson.

David married Sarah Taylor in 1843. Sarah was born on 07 Jan 1819 in Tennessee; died in 1896 in Jackson County, Tennessee. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
