Notes:

The word Olinda means the beautiful and the term was borrowed from a place near Pernambuco which he had visited when he was in Brazil on business in early youth The property now belongs to the William L McDowell estate

Blair McClenachan's two daughters Matilda and Ann were early owners of the estate and built the house of stone plastered M and A is marked in the outer wall

Mrs Mary Penn Gaskill wife of Thomas Penn Gaskill was a sister of these ladies and she lived on the place opposite now owned by the Hopper family Blair McClenachan is mentioned in Watson's Annals of Philadelphia

Notes:

Reading Howell's, map, published in 1792, indicates the position of Donaldson's grist mill, near present township pumping station. In that year, the property was again put up for sale. Among an array of buildings, it included a three-story stone merchant mill (the one now placared "Ye Olde Grist Mill"), a two-story stone grist mill, a stone paper mill and a saw mill. In 1797, the whole was bought by Geoge McClenachan, son of Blair McClenachan, that pituresque figure of the Revolution, whom William Cobett, the satirist, called, "Blair, the great, The Irish guadian of the State." Ten years later, George McClenachan sold the paper mill, but remained in possession of the rest of the property until his death, in 1833.

Peele is from Maryland, a tender, soft, affectionate Creature. . . .1 He shewed me a large Picture containing a Group of Figures, which upon Inquiry I found were his Family. His Mother, and his Wifes Mother, himself and his Wife, his Brothers and sisters, and his Children, Sons and Daughters all young. There was a pleasant, a happy Chearfulness in their Countenances, and a Familiarity in their Airs towards each other.2 He shewed me one moving Picture. His Wife, all bathed in Tears, with a Child about six months old, laid out, upon her Lap. This Picture struck me prodigiously. He has a Variety of Portraitsó very well done. But not so well as Copeleys Portraits. Copeley is the greatest Master, that ever was in America. His Portraits far exceed Wests. {p. 104} Peele has taken General Washington, Dr. Franklin, Mrs. Washington, Mrs. Rush, Mrs. Hopkinson. Mr. Blair McClenachan and his little Daughter in one Picture. His Lady and her little son, in another.
