    Other Events:

    Notes:

Alt. Birth: After 1770 Woodland, Bradford Township, Clearfield County, Pennsylvania

From the Barger Journal: George Barger settled at Woodland, Clearfield CO., Pennsylvania about the year 1800. He was a relative of the Bargers found in Centre, Montour, Huntingdon, Cumberland and Westmoreland, Pennsylvania as declared by his descendants. He became the owner of a large tract of land in the Woodland community, nearly all of which, we are told, was timbered. Aided by his sons, who were hardy young men, much of the land was cleared and farming became the chief occupation of the family. That extensive deposits of coal were on the estate seems not to have been known by Mr. Barger. He gave to friends some of the land, believing that neither he nor his descendants would have use for it. After his day the coal was discovered, and inexhaustible mines of it on the place are still being worked, having already yielded fortunes. George Barger is said to have been generous, hospitable, upright, and a good church member. He reared his children well; and, in time, established his four sons on good farms, carved out of the original estate. We do not know the name of his wife, nor the names of other members of the family, if there were other children. Near at hand was Bradford Church, which appears to have been the property of Methodists at the time this family flourished; and we understand George Barger and family were affiliated with that congregation. He was an ardent lover of home and home ties, and dispensed hospitality and good cheer in approved colonial style in his home. Both he and his wife lived to old age and were laid to rest in the old cemetery at Bradford Church. Woodland is in the brick manufacturing district, and the famous Woodland fire-brick are well known among builders and contractors. The names of four children were: Joseph, George, Peter and Isaac.
