    Notes:

    An Experience I Shall Never Forget - - November 28, 1900´tabª
´tabªIn the fall of 1900 neither my husband nor I was feeling well. He had a bad case of Sciatic rheumatism in his back and left leg. He was in terrific pain. He had been in bed for a week, unable to straighten his leg. The doctors, after consultation, decided it would be best for him to go to Mount Clemens, Michigan, for a series of sulfur baths. At this time we were living in Sycamore, Illinois, a town about fifty miles west of Chicago. To relieve the pain and to make the trip possible, the doctor injected a heavy sedative into my husband's back. In an hour John could dress and could walk with a cane. During this period I was suffering with neuritis in my back.
´tabªWhile my husband was away a neighbor's daughter, Marion Brown stayed at night with me and the children. Earl was three and a half and Ethel was sixteen months old. During the day the children and I were alone.
´tabªOne morning after we had finished breakfast and Marion had gone to work, there was a knock at the door. I opened the door and there stood a man in an orchid suit! He said he had been to several homes but no one would let him in. He said, "I am hungry." I opened the door wide and said, "Come in, and sit down and I will cook you some breakfast". He said, "No, there is plenty on the table". I asked him what he would like to drink, tea or coffee. He said, "No, just a cup of warm water". Later, when I thought about it, I was surprised at myself for I never let strangers in when I was alone, but I was not a bit afraid of him.
´tabªAfter he had eaten we talked a little about the church. He inquired if there were any saints in the town but there were none that I knew of. He then moved his chair back from the table and asked the children to come to him. Earl looked questioningly at me and I said, "Yes, dear, he is a nice man", so Earl went over to him and Ethel followed. He placed a hand on the head of each child and as they stood there looking intently into his face he blessed them. He then blessed me and offered a blessing on the house. As he blessed me the pain of neuritis in my back was gone instantly and I felt fine.
´tabªWhen he left, he just went out and closed the door. I hurried to the window for another look as I had never before seen a man in an orchid suit! But he had disappeared completely, leaving no footprints in the snow, neither coming nor going. I stood there pondering, when the Spirit said to me, "That was John, the apostle".
´tabªI felt well when my husband returned and the children, who had had colds when he left, were well and happy. He wanted to know what had caused this change and I then told him of the wonderful experience we had shared while he was away. We both have thanked God many times for this blessing and I shall continue to thank Him as long as I live.

    Sycamore, Illinois--September 20, 1904 - - - A wonderful Healing.
´tabªJuly 19, 1899 after my baby Ethel was born I did not have good care. I was very sick and Doctors told me inflammation had set in my side in the linings between the lung and liver. I was very sick for weeks but finally was able to get out of bed. I had several Doctors attending to me from time to time but all they could give me was morphine to deaden the pain. We had X-rays taken and they told us what was wrong, and an operation was all they could do for me with electric needles. One of the Doctors was a Latter Day Saint.
´tabªI asked Dr. Carter of Decalb what chance I had to get well if I was operated on. He said well Mrs. Jack, one chance out of a hundred, but it's all we Doctors can offer you. Well I said I will look to the great physician. Time went on and I suffered for five years and two months. On September 20, 1904, John and I and our two little ones, Earl and Ethel, went to a reunion at Piano, Illinois. There I had a good spiritual feast and I was administered to by R. C. Evans and the pain left me while his hands were on my head, and that evening in meeting R. C. Evans was preaching. The large tent was full of people. While listening to the sermon, I felt a sharp pain cut through my side - oh so sharp I thought I was shot. I arose to my feet and moaned. My Husband and Brother Johnson caught me or I would have fallen but that dreadful feeling only lasted an instant, then I sat down and listened to the rest ofthe sermon. As soon as the meeting was over I went into our tent to see what had happened to my side and I found I could raise my arm and use it the same as my other one, and no pain. Oh what a relief after suffering five years and two months so badly, my lung and liver was now cut apart. Brother Evan's did not know what ailed me when he administered to me. After the meeting was over Brother Evans came to me and said Mrs. Jack,
I saw the operation and you will be healed. Now when you go home, you warm consecrated olive oil and rub your side every night for two weeks. I did and was completely healed. From the time I was administered to and for a weeks after there was a Guardian Angel stayed with me and watched over me; you know I felt so good after the burden of pain was lifted, and I could move my arm like the other one. I felt I could do any work but every time I went to lift anything heavy, or do anything that would hurt me, I was stopped right there and told what way to do it. My work was made easy for me. This Angel stayed with me for 8 weeks and by that time I was entirely healed and have never had any trouble with that side since. The Doctors marveled about it, they told me that they had never seen a healing before. So I have been permitted to stay on this earth and have two little girls since that time and have lived to raise our four children.
