Here is the obituary for Robert Hasty, father of William J. Hastings. It comes from the Alcona County Review, September 25, 1885.

Another Pioneer Gone
Robert Hasty, who has lived in Alcona Township, this county, for 15 years or more, departed this life last Friday evening; heart disease being the pronounced cause of his death. He had the week previous been over in Canada purchasing a lot of working horses, to be used in the lumber woods the coming winter, and returning home on Friday or Saturday of said week, he was taken ill. The Monday following he was able to be about the house again and remained up for several days. He was subsequently taken suddenly ill, and passed away within a few hours. He was over sixty years of age.
Robert Hastey came to this country and commenced carving out a home for himself in our forests, when neighbors were few and far between; but he lived to develop a good farm himself, and see the country all about thickly settled with others whose clearings and agricultural developments are the admiration of all who visit the county. Mr Hastey devoted much of his time the past few years to jobbing in the lumber woods for Alger, Smith & Co., and his recent purchase of additional horses was for the enlargement of his operations in that line of work. He leaves a wife and seven or eight children. Most of the children are grown to manhood and womanhood.
