Description : Death in threshing machine of Wm. Van Alstine, 10/23/1892.
Transcription : FATALLY INJURED. Wm. Van Alstine Meets a Horrible Death in Haynes. Last Monday morning a horse power threshing machine, owned by J. M. Fettes, was in operation at Archie Campbell's in Haynes township. Wm. H. Van Alstine was assisting and while engaged in oiling the gearing near the separator his overcoat became entangled in the tumbling rod and in an instant he was whirled around the shaft, his head striking a block of wood with sickening force, crushing his skull. He was carried around a second time. The machinery was stopped as soon as possible when it was found that besides the fatal blow he had received on the skull, his arm was broken and he was otherwise frightfully injured. He did not rally but lived for an hour and a half after the accident. Deceased had been a resident of the township for many years and was a respected citizen, being a member in good standing of the local lodge of Odd Fellows. He leaves a wife and a family of several small children in rather poor circumstances.
