Description : Description of a trip by the editor through Alcona township to see the farms.
Transcription : ALCONA. Out Among the Many Farmers. The editor's trip through a large portion of the farming district in Alcona township, last week, was attended by much pleasure and profit. Among the things most noticeable was the enlargement and general improvement of the acreage of tillable land on nearly every man's farm, and certainly this was a sure indication that the agricultural interests were receiving rapid development in this section of our county. Among the farms which we were permitted to gaze upon in particular, were those of Messrs. R. Hastey, Sam Hill, Jas. Martin, Lewis and Geo. Lee, McGregor, Charles Larson, D. Mulholland, T. Nestle, Thos. Fleming, Richie, McVeigh, Jno. McDonald, Wm. Johnson, Towner?, LaFrances, Duncan McArthur, and others. On nearly every farm the work of logging and farming were being pursued quite extensively. David Mulholland, who is now living upon and working the McNally farm, owned by Frank E. Beard, we found plowing among a lot of stumps on his own farm. He has in a fair acreage of grain and root crops this season, which promise good harvest. Mr. Lyons who died last week (or whom the Review reported as having die, in error) is now living again and working Charles Larson's farm. Mr. Richie, who bought out the Beard farm, has the largest clearing of any of the farmers in the township, and also has in a large acreage of crops. Wm. Vanalstine is living upon and working Mr. Nestle's farm, from the appearance of crops in the ground and the general improvements being made, we should say he was a valuable tenant. Mr. J. L. Shaw, who came from Pennsylvania last season, is living upon and working Mr. McArthur's place. He has recently purchased a new farm of his own and is also making some improvements thereon. Mr. Martin was preparing to build a barn. There were other, minor improvements, noticeable, but the crowded state of our columns this week forbid the detail thereof. In making this trip we desired to take in the Milligan district also, but we found our time too short to do it and get home the same night. But, however, we shall visit this district ere long, Providence permitting. We shall also get about Harrisville and Greenbush districts of agriculture.
