John Brown Pike was born November 22nd, 1827 to James Brown and Elizabeth Pike in Lawrencebury, Indiana. During the outbreak of the Mexican War he joined Company C of the 4th Indiana Infantry. His General was Winfield Scott, the Commander of the U.S. Army in Mexico. They were withdrawn from the conquest of Monterey and shipped to the conquest of Vera Cruz. Then they advanced towards Mexico. On September 14th, 1847 they captured Mexico City. Shortly after the war gold was discovered in California and the Pike families began to travel westward. Some families traveled from St. Louis to Oregon and California in covered wagons. However John, his father, and some other families headed down the Ohio River and up to Mississippi to Burlington. From there they headed across the prairies to Jefferson, Wapello, and Mahaska counties in Iowa (PIKE p.272-274).

He then met and married Eliza Frasier in the early 1850's. She was born in Eddyville, Iowa with no recorded birth date. Together they had four children: Anderson Victor, Mary "Mollie" Elizabeth, John Zebulon, and William Henry. Soon the outbreak of the Civil War took place. John and a group of men took their horses and rode to Mt. Pleasant, Iowa. There they joined the 4th Iowa Calvary. The calvary was organized between November 23rd and December 26th, 1861. He was later transferred to the Marine Corps due to a break in his health. He served with the Marine Corps through the seize of Vicksburg and until the end of the war. His wife, Eliza, died shortly after the war ended on March of 1864 in Kirkville, Iowa(PIKE p.272-274).

He then married his second wife, Ann Eliza Hull, December 2nd, 1866 in Hopkins, Missouri. She was born April 1st, 1848 in Prospect, Ohio. Together they had eight children: Eva Eliza, James Cornelius, Lucy Ann, George Washington, Isabelle May, Herman Wyatt, Rufus Vernon, and Leon Wilson. They raise their family in Braddyvills, Iowa were he worked as a carpenter, wagon maker, and millwright. Even though he wasn't in good health he still worked hard to provide for his family. He didn't like the idea of being a pensioner of the government. However his congressman, Major John F. Lacey, persisted that he should receive a pension of eight dollars a month for serving in the Mexican War. So Major Lacy drew up the pension papers and hand delivered them to John, for him to sign. The pension did increase within time and even extended to his widow after his death(PIKE p.272-274).

At the age of seventy-seven, despite his health, he filed a claim on one hundred and sixty acres of land in western South Dakota with his sons. He then assisted in building his own house, which was a shack. They lived there until they were able to make proof of the house and receive a government patent for the same. Later they sold this to help ease their financial problems. He later died January 28th, 1910 in Kirkville, Iowa. His wife, Ann, died twenty years later on August 8th(PIKE p.272-274).

At the outbreak of the Mexican War young John joined the Infantry in Indiana (Co. C 4th Indiana Infantry) and was with Gen. Scott at the conquest of Monterey after which they were withdrawn and shipped to the conquest of Vera Cruz. From there they advanced against and captured the City of Mexico. Immediately following the War with Mexico and the discovery of gold in California, the Pike families began their trek westward. Some joined covered wagon trains from St. Louis to Oregon and California, but John Brown Pike and his father, James Brown Pike and their families came down the Ohio River and up the Mississippi to Burlington and across the prairies to Jefferson, Wapello and Mahaska counties in Iowa. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he and a group of men from these coun- ties taking their own horses rode to Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, where they became a part of the 4th Iowa Cavalry organized November 23 to December 26, 1861. His Regiment served through the War, but on account of a break in his health he was transferred to the Marine Corps through the siege of Vicksburg and until the end of the War.

He was married again at Hopkins, Missouri to Ann Eliza Hull and as carpenter, wagon maker, millwright, he took up life at Braddyville, Iowa. While his general health had been weakened by his war service, he never liked the idea of being a pensioner on the Government. His Congressman, Major John F. Lacey made out and brought him the papers which he signed granting him a pension of $8. 00 per month for his service in the Mexican War, and this was increased from time to time to the end of his life January 28, 1910 and ex- tended to his widow to August 8, 1930. Anxious to overcome the handicap of broken health and his to gain a competence in his later years, he, at the age of 77 years filed a claim on 160 acres of land in western South Dakota and assisted in building his own house (shack) and lived there with his wife until they were able to make final proof and receive a Government patent for the same. This he later sold to help ease the burden of their declining years. He departed this life from their humble home in Kirkville, Iowa, where they had reared their family to maturity and was laid to rest near his father and mother, James Brown and Elizabeth Car- berry Pike who had come to Iowa with him in 1849 from Lawrenceburg, Indiana.
