    • Thomas received from his father by deedof gift, dated 13 Mar. 1716/17, a farm of ninety acres on Pottapaug Hill in Norwich [now in Sprague], where he always lived. He purchased other lands there and provided for his son Joseph by the gift of fifty acres on Pottapaug Hill 3 Mar. 1746/47 and for his son Moses by giving hima half of all his lands on Pottapaug Hill on 3 Nov. 1763, except sevenacres given by his will to Joseph. Probably his son Thomas, who removed to Woodbury immediately after his marriage, was given the means to begin his numerous purchases of land there.The will of Thomas Hazen, dated 3 Nov. 1763 and probated at Norwich 9 Feb. 1774, established the marriages of three of his daughters not previously discovered, and is as follows:
      Know all Men by these presents that I Thomas Hazzen of Norwich in the County of New London & Colony of Conneccticut in New England, Considering ye Mortality of Body &c have thought fitt Now while I am in Right understanding & Memory to Settle & Dispose of my Worldly Goods and Estate by this my Last Will and Testament in the following Manner and form--
      And first of all after my Just Debts & funarel Charges are Discharged IWill that my Loving & faithful wife Elisabeth have & Enjoy ye free use&Improvement of ye East Room in my Dwelling house & ye Necessary previledge in ye Celler & a Convient Garden Spot by Sd house So Long as SheShall Remain my widow, I also Will that my Sd wife have ye previledge of Giting her Necessary fire wood for her own use in Sd house on my LandSo Long as She Shall Remain my widow, I also Will that my Sd wife haveone Cow well keept in all Seasons of y year by my son Moses Hazzen at his proper Cost & Charge, So Long as She Shall Remain mly widow, I also Give to my Sd wife one Good Cow and all ye Houshold Good which She brought tome at our Marriage, & thirty pounds Lawful Money (to be paid to her bySd Son Moses in one year after my Decease) to be at her Dispose for Ever, all in Lieu of her Right of Dower or thirds my Estate--
      Item I Give and Bequeath to my Daughter Martha Story fifteen pounds Lawful Money or an Equivalent thereunto in Bill of Credit of ye Colony of CT to be paid to her by my Son Joseph Hazzen within two years after my Decease,
      Item I Give & Bequeath to my Sd Son Joseph Hazzen and to his heirs and assigns for Ever four Acres of Intervale Land upon the Lower End of my Intervale Land adjoyning to Shoutucket River, & three Acres of other Land adjoining to Sd four Acres of Intervale Land he my Sd Son Joseph paying to my Sd Daughter Martha as above Willed to her--
      Item I Give & Bequeath to my four Daughters Namly Sarah Bell, Allice Chapman, Martha Story & Hannah Hide Sisteen pounds Lawfull Money or an Equivalent thereunto in Bills of Credit of ye Colony of CT to be Equally Divided ABetween them, and paid to them by my three Sons Namly Joseph Hazzen Thomas Hazzen & Moses Hazzen in Equal proportion in five years after my Decease--
      Item I Give & Bequeath to my Sd three Son [sic] above Named & to their heirs & assigns for Ever about Eight Acres of Land which I have that is Lying & Being in ye Township of Waterbury In the County of New Haven to be Equally Divided Between them they paying Each one his Equal proportion to my four Daughters above Named of ye above Mentioned Sixteen poundsas above willed and ordered be paid to them my Sd four Daughters.
      Item I Give & Bequeath to my Daughter Sarah Bell fifteen pounds Lawful Money or an Equivalent thereunto in Bills of Credit of ye Colony of CT to be paid to her by my Sd Son Moses within four years after mly Decease--
      Item I Give & Bequeath to my Daughter Allice Chapman five pounds LawfulMoney or an Equivalent thereunto in Bills of Credit of ye Colony of CTto be paid to her by my Sd Son Moses within four years after my Decease--
      Item I Give & Bequeath to my Daughter Hannah Hide fifteen pounds LawfulMoney or an Equivalent thereunto in Bills of Credit of ye Colony of CTto be paid to her within four years after my Decease--
      Item I Give & Bequeath to my Sd Son Moses Hazzen & to his heirs & assigns for Ever all the Rest of my Estate Both Real and personal he my Sd Son Moses paying performing & Allowing to my Sd wife as above willed to her, and paying to three of my Sd Daughters Namly Sarah Allic e & Hannahas above Willed them that is to Say fifteen pounds to Sd Sarah & Five pounds to Sd Allice, & fifteen pounds to Sd Hannah, and h e ye Sd Moses is above ordered--
      Finally I Do make Constitute and appoint my Sd Son Joseph Hazzen to be my Sole Executor of this my Last will & Testament (who Shall be paid outof my Estate for his Charge & trouble) and I Do hereby Solomnly Revokemake Null and void all other Wills Testaments & Bequests by me heretofore made, Ratifying & Allowing this & No other to be my Last Will & Testament, In Witness whereof I ye Sd Thomas Hazzen have here unto Set my hand and Seal the third Day of November A D: 1763--Signed Sealed published & Declared by the Sd Thomas Hazzen as his Last Will
      and Testament In presence of us ye Subscribers Ebenr Hartshorn DanielArmstrong Juner Ebenr Hartshorn ye 3rd [Signed] Thomas hazzen [seal]
      The inventory of the estate amounted to 324-1-5 and was taken in Mar and Apr. 1774 by Ebenr Hartshorn, James Elderkin, and Jeremiah Ladd .
      The will was exhibited by Moses Hazen, as Joseph Hazen informed the court by letter that he was unable to accept the trust because of infirmity and desired his brother Moses to be appointed. The court appointed Moses 1 Mar. 1774, Moses Hazzen and Ezekiel Ladd, both of Norwich, were bound 1 Mar. 1774, Ebenr Hartshorn and Benj: Huntington Jrt, witnessing the bond.
      When the estate was distributed 4 July 1774, Elizabeth, the widow, was given twelve rods of garden spot, the east room of the dwelling house, and a necessary plrivilege in the cellar and getting wood; also one feather beddd, bolster, and two pillows, one check bird eye coverlid, one streaked coverlid, one white woolen sheet, and a large number of other household articles (all that she brought at her marriage). The inventory list the value as 15-9-7 pounds.[Hazen21404.FTW]
