´uª0 Notes for Richard Platt:
´uª0 Roydon, where Richard and Mary married, is four miles southeast of Ware.
´uª0 On 16 April 1609 was mentioned as son in the will of George Platte of Ware.
´uª0 On 13 July 1629 there was an "Order that Richard Platt of Ware and his apprentice´uª0 ´uª0 be´uª0 ´uª0 brought before certain justices, that some order might be taken to end the´uª0 ´uª0 differences´uª0 ´uª0 between them."´uª0
´uª0 On 25 April 1638 Westminster, England, Richard and Mary Platt signed a final´uª0 ´uª0 concord´uª0 ´uª0 to dispose of their lands and houses at Ware, receiving L42 for the´uª0 ´uª0 premises. Then they´uª0 ´uª0 prepared to sail for New England, but may have had to stay in´uª0 ´uª0 or near London for some´uª0 ´uª0 months while awaiting passage. They appear to have´uª0 ´uª0 crossed the Atlantic either in the´uª0 ´uª0 latter half of 1638 or the first half of 1639.´uª0
´uª0 It has been stated that the Platt family arrived at New Haven in August 1639, and´uª0 ´uª0 this´uª0 ´uª0 may be true, but Richard Platt is not among those who signed the covenant of´uª0 ´uª0 22´uª0 ´uª0 August 1639, and "Richard Plot" did not join the Church of Milford at New´uª0 ´uª0 Haven until´uª0 ´uª0 29 January 1639/1640. He was a free planter, according to Abbott in´uª0 ´uª0 Milford, New Haven´uª0 ´uª0 County, CT, in 1639. His home lot was #38, consisting of 4´uª0 ´uª0 acres and one rod, near the´uª0 ´uª0 corner of the present West Main and Cherry Streets. In´uª0 ´uª0 1669 he was chosen deacon of´uª0 ´uª0 the church at Milford. He appeared on the list of´uª0 ´uª0 freemen at Milford in October 1669:´uª0 ´uª0 "A List of the Freemen of Milford [October´uª0 ´uª0 1669] ... Richard Platt."´uª0
´uª0 In her will dated 9 November 1669, proved 20 November 1669, Sarah (Bryan?)´uª0 ´uª0 (Baldwin) Astwood of Milford appointed "my beloved brothers Richard Platt and´uª0 ´uª0 Thomas´uª0 ´uª0 Wheeler" overseers. Richard Platt and Thomas Wheeler were also´uª0 ´uª0 witnesses to the will.´uª0 ´uª0 Since Sarah's maiden name has not been proven, this´uª0 ´uª0 statement has led to much´uª0 ´uª0 genealogical speculation as to how she was related to´uª0 ´uª0 these men -- or were they merely´uª0 ´uª0 highly esteemed "brethren in the church"? If you´uª0 ´uª0 look to their descendants rather than´uª0 ´uª0 their antecedants, another possible´uª0 ´uª0 explanation suggests itself -- Sarah's grandson´uª0 ´uª0 Zachariah3 Baldwin (Richard2,´uª0 ´uª0 Sylvester1) was married to Richard Platt's granddaughter´uª0 ´uª0 Mary3 Atkinson (Mary2,´uª0 ´uª0 Richard1).´uª0
´uª0 The will of "Richard Platt of Milford in Ye colony of conecticutt" was dated 4´uª0 ´uª0 August´uª0 ´uª0 1683: It makes the following bequests:´uª0
´uª0 I give unto my son John Platt beside what I have formerly given him L26 & foure´uª0 ´uª0 bibles for his children. I give unto my son Isaac Platt L20 besides what I have´uª0 ´uª0 formerly´uª0 ´uª0 given him & for his children three bibles. ´uª0 I give my son Josia Platt beside what I have formerly given him the meadow on ye´uª0 ´uª0 far´uª0 ´uª0 side the creeke by stubby playne, & halfe the pasture or land by ye necke gate,´uª0 ´uª0 & the´uª0 ´uª0 land not yet taken in of my division, & halfe the pasture land below the two´uª0 ´uª0 orchards, &´uª0 ´uª0 five bibles for his children. I give Josia Whitmore & his sister two´uª0 ´uª0 bibles. I give my son´uª0 ´uª0 Joseph Platt's children two bibles.´uª0
´uª0 I give my son Joseph Platt all the remainder of my estate, housing, barnes, lands,´uª0 ´uª0 meadows, corne, cattle, horses, mares, sheep, hogs, movables, he paying the´uª0 ´uª0 legacyes´uª0 ´uª0 above named & debts.´uª0
´uª0 I make my son Joseph Platt my executor of this my last Will.
´uª0 I desire Elder Buckingham & my son Josia Platt to see this my Will fulfilled, & I´uª0 ´uª0 give´uª0 ´uª0 Elder Buckingham & my son Josia twenty shillings apiece for their paynes.´uª0
´uª0 [Signed] Richard Platt
´uª0 Daniel Buckingham and Josia Platt, witnesses
´uª0 The Inventory of the estate was taken 13 February 1684 by Samuell Ells, John´uª0 ´uª0 Streame,´uª0 ´uª0 and Sylvanus Baldwin. It totaled L547:05:07. (New Haven probate´uª0 ´uª0 records vol 1, part 2,´uª0 ´uª0 p. 138).´uª0
´uª0 The Platt stone in the Milford Memorial Bridge reads:
´uª0 "DEACON RICHARD PLATT
´uª0 Obit 1684
´uª0 MARY His Wife."
