After May's death, William left his infant son with Dr. Moore, the attending physician, in Sault Ste. Marie, and traveled south through Michigan leaving the other four children with his various sisters along the way (William with Louise, Percy with Annie, and Elsie with Bella). He settled in Lorain, Ohio where he worked as a paymaster at a shipbuilding company.
