From "History of the Great Lakes", J.B. Mansfield (1899)
CAPTAIN JOHN J. PEARSON Captain John J. Pearson went on the lakes at the age of twelve years as second porter on the Lake Breeze. He was born in Birmingham, England, August 8, 1868, and in 1873 came to this country with his father, Richard Pearson, who is still living in Parsons, W. Va., engaged in the lumber business. The Captain lived in Au Sable, Mich., until he commenced sailing. For several years following 1880 he was before the mast on different lake vessels until 1891, when he became mate on the Atlantic. In 1892 he was given command of the Flora, on which he remained one season, transferring from this boat to the Atlantic and the Champion, and sailing them the following seasons. He then came on the State of Michigan, in command of which he has since been retained. Captain Pearson is a young man for such a responsible position, but his fortunate experience on the water has given his employers the greatest confidence in him and he has every prospect of a brilliant career. Captain Pearson was married, November 24, 1886, to Miss Luella V. Edgar, whose father, Andrew K. Edgar, was one of the pioneers of Alcona county, Mich.; he died in 1881. The Captain and his wife have two children: Armand J., born May 11, 1888; and Lois Mabelle, born January 17, 1890. | Pearson, John J (I10948)

From The Kalamazoo Valley Family Newsletter Vol. 10 No. 4 Summer Quarter June 1981:
"On June 30, 1863 a Settlers license, to Andrew K. Edgar, was granted. To improve and cultivate a part of the land known as Swamp Land of Alcona Township in Alcona County. On July 20, 1868 for the sum of $1.00, governor Henry H. Crapo, granted Edgar 69.27 acres.
Andrew and Margaret Edgar had several children all of whom were given a portion of the land upon their deaths. Among the recipients was Llewelln Pearson. She bought all portions of the land from her brothers and sisters. She married John J. Pearson who worked in the Coast Guard station at Sturgeon Point. He later sailed the Great Lakes as Captain.
They had two children Jay Armand (Cap) and Mabelle L. Zimmerman who eventually came back to the land after it had been vacant for many years. They built 3 roadside overnite cabins and later added 9 more. They also built a restaurant known as Alcona Beach which they sold 25 years ago to the Muehlbecks. They also built 4 cottages on the beach, three of which have been sold. The fourth was remodeled this spring and the daughter of Armand and, Mabelle and her husband have moved there.
After the death of Mabelles' husband Walter, she built her home on the beach. Also a six unit motel was built and it is currently being run by Lois and Al Cooper, the daughter of Mabelle and Walter Zimmerman." | Pearson, Mabelle Lois (I9994)

"Say That Newberry Knew Sums Spent" (Testimony on Letters and Telegram Introduced to ConnectHim with Expenditures.ONE WORKER PAID $10 A DAY County Clerk Says He Was Threatened with Defeat in Re-election if He Did Not Fail in Line)
Special to The New York Times. February 10, 1920, Tuesday
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., Feb. 9.--Government attorneys in the alleged election corruption case produced evidence today to show that Senator Truman H. Newberry was informed by letter and telegram of the expenditure of large sums of money in his campaign. The Government introduced a letter written....William R. Barber of Harrisville, County Clerk of Alcona County, caused a sensation when he tesftified that Benjamin F. Reed, a Newberry field agent and one of the indicted men, had threatened him with defeat for re-election if he did not support Newberry. "I suggested a county chairman to Reed, but he wanted me to take the position," said Barber. "I told him I could not, for I had friends among all the Senatorial campaign workers. Reed told me I had better be careful, for Newberry was organizing every county in the state and that all kinds of money would be spent."
