John Sutton, 3rd Baron Dudley (1494-1553), commonly known as Lord Quondam, was the eldest son and heir of Sir Edward Sutton, 2nd Baron Dudley and his wife Lady Cicely (Willoughby) Sutton.
He was born about 1494, at Dudley Castle, Worcestershire.
He was betrothed to Lady Cicely Grey (a daughter of Thomas Grey, first Marquess of Dorset, by Cicely, his wife, suo jure Baroness Harrington and Bonville) by 30 October 1501, whom he subsequently married.
He was knighted 13 October 1513.
He succeeded his father as Baron Dudely in 1532 and immediately began to sell his patrimony. He was never summoned to Parliament.
He acquired the nickname, "Lord Quondam" ("Lord Has-been" or "Lord Formerly"), when he allowed his estate, including the castle of Dudley, to fall into the possession of his cousin, John Dudley, Duke of Northumberland. The Duke resided at Dudley Castle and added new and magnificent structures to the old fortress. After Northumberland's execution, Dudley Castle was forfeited to the crown, and in 1555 was restored to Lord Quondam's eldest son, Edward Sutton, 4th Baron Dudley.
'Lord Quondam' had several brothers: Thomas, William, Arthur, Geoffery and George. Lord Dudley decided upon a city residence at Tothill Street in Westminster. He died in Middlesex and was buried 18 September 1553 inSt. Margaret's Church, Westminster, London; his wife was buried there on 28 April 1554.
Dugdale wrote, ?It is reported by credible tradition of this John Lord Dudley, that being a weak man of understanding, whereby he had exposed himself to some wants, and so became entangled in the usurer?s bonds, John Dudley, then Viscount Lisle and Earl of Warwick (afterwards Duke of Northumberland), thirsting after Dudley Castle, the chief seat of the family, made those money merchants his instruments to work him out of it,which by some mortgage being at length effected, this poor lord becameexposed to the charity of his friends for a subsistence, and spending the remainder of his life in visits amongst them, was commonly called theLord Quondam.?
His children included Edward, Captain Henry (Knt.), George, Margaret, Thomas, Dorothy, Elizabeth, and Robert.
It has for some time been acknowledged that a grandson of Captain Sir Henry Dudley was that Thomas Dudley whom sailed on the Arabella in 1630 to become governor of the MA Bay Colony several times. | Sutton, John (I22443)

Jonas came to Huntington from Oram in the parish of Halifax, County York.´uª0 ´uª0 He was´uª0 ´uª0 called "Jonas Wood Oram" to distinguish him from his cousin, Jonas Wood´uª0 ´uª0 Halifax.´uª0 ´uª0 He had the title "Mr."´uª0
´uª0 and from there went to Hempstead Long Island. In 1644, he was one of the patentees´uª0 ´uª0 of´uª0 ´uª0 Hempstead. ´uª0 Jonas was Deputy from Huntington, and on 17 May 1658 he was at New Haven. In´uª0 ´uª0 1665, he was a member of 1st Assembly, Hempstead.´uª0
´uª0 Jonas Wood, William Rogers and Thomas Wilkes of Huntington made the second or´uª0 ´uª0 "Eastern Purchase." It extended eastward from the First Purchase to the Nissequogue´uª0 ´uª0 (Smithtown) River, and its bounds were even more loosely defined than were those of´uª0 ´uª0 the First Purchase. The Indians reserved liberty to hunt and plant therein, and in´uª0 ´uª0 addition to a few garments, were given "seven quarts of licker and aleven ounces of´uª0 ´uª0 powther." Overlapping boundaries of various Indian purchases caused many´uª0 ´uª0 disputes;´uª0 ´uª0 the east boundary of the Eastern Purchase overlapped with land on the west´uª0 ´uª0 side of the´uª0 ´uª0 river that Richard Smith had purchased from the Indians.´uª0 ´/uª | Wood, Jonas (I24059)

Joseph H. Doane, the second son, started
in life as a clerk in the store of James Treat, and became a prominent
merchant and manufacturer, the firm name of Treat & Doane, afterward
Doane & Treat, being long well known in this section. He married Frances
Treat, born in Preston City, January 13, 1799, daughter of James and Polly
(Stanton) Treat. She was descended from Richard Treat, born, it is said,
in Pitminster, Somerset County, England, in 1584, who died soon after his
arrival in Wethersfield, Conn., October n, 1669. He left three sons: Richard,
Jr.; Robert Treat, who became the Governor of Connecticut; and James Treat,
whose son, the Rev. Salmon, was the father of the Rev. Samuel Treat, the
grandfather of Mrs. Doane. The eight children of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph H.
Doane were: Joseph, James, John, Emily, William, Eunice, Henry, Juliet.
The only members of the family now living are: William, who resides in
Cincinnati; Juliet, who is in Cincinnati with her brother; Henry, who resides
in Brooklyn, and is in business in New York City; and Joseph A., the subject
of this sketch. The father died October 22, 1854; and the mother died April
15, 1881, in the eighty-third year of her age. | Doane, Joseph H (I19491)

Joseph owned considerable property in New York before the Revolutionary War, which was taken during the war. He then went to Canada in 1793 and petitioned the Province of Lower Canada as follows: "the Memorial of Joseph Odell, formerly of Poughkeepsie, State of New York, in behalf of himself and Six Sons, Vis: -- John, Joshua, Joseph, Junr., Jas., Chas., and Jacob, Humbly sheweth-- That your Memorialist, having lost a very considerable Property, by the late American War during which he was from time to time taken from his home, and kept a close prisoner in jail frequently for days together, denied even Water to drink, and otherwise very ill treated...not having received Lands or other compensation for his Losses; humbly prays Your Excellency will be pleased to grant him, in the Townshop of Hemmingford, a lot for himself, and one for each of his sons..." Josiah WRIGHT, son of Benjamin and Elisabeth (HAND) WRIGHT, was born in
1708, and died in 1783. In 1735 he married Rhoda DOWD, who was born in 1714,
daughter of Cornelius DOWD, of Madison, and died in 1790. The marriage is found
in the Westbrook Church Record. Josiah WRIGHT lived on what is now known as the
Josiah WRIGHT farm, a short distance west of the Horse Hill school house, the
dwelling standing back in the fields, a short distance from the present
highway. It is evident he was a large landholder, owning nearly all of what is
not the Horse Hill District.
In 1745 a petition was presented to the General Assembly, signed by Thomas
SPENCER, Michael HILL, Thomas SPENCER, Jr., Josiah WRIGHT, Josiah WILCOX, Job
BULKLEY, Daniel EDWARDS and Ebenezer PLATTS, of the towns of Saybrook and
Killingworth, declaring that they are sober dissenters from the worship and
ministry established by the laws of this government; that they are of the
persuasion of the people called Baptists, and are true Protestants, and pray
for the indulgence of this Assembly. Their petition was granted on condition
that they take the oath prescribed by Parliament in such cases. These eight
were doubtless among the founders of the Baptist Church at Winthrop, which was
organized in 1744, with seventeen members.
Josiah and Rhoda (DOWD) WRIGHT had children: Jeremiah, Josiah (the next in the
line we are tracing), Ezekiel, Mary, Rhoda, Prudence, Jane and Elisabeth. Of
these, Jeremiah, born in 1738, lived on Horse Hill, just north of what is now
known as the William BURGHARDT house; he married Hannah BROWN and they had two
children, Jeremiah and Lucretia (Mrs. Nathan STANNARD). Ezekiel occupied part
of the farm near his father's home, living in a house lately occupied by his
grandson, Josiah WRIGHT; he had four sons and four daughters, David, Jonathan,
Josiah, Ezekiel, Mrs. Justus CLARK, Mrs. Barber GRINNELL, Mrs. William JOHNSON,
and Mrs. BURGHARDT. Jane married David THOMPSON. It is thought one of the other
daughters married a man named BURGHARDT. | Wright, Josiah (I21191)
