Peninsular Campaign Map

This is the fifth of the Seven Days' Battles.

On June 30, Huger's, Longstreet's, and A.P. Hill's divisions converged on the retreating Union army in the vicinity of Glendale or Frayser's Farm. Longstreet's and Hill's attacks penetrated the Union defense near Willis Church, routing McCall's division. McCall was captured.

Union counterattacks by Hooker's and Kearny's divisions sealed the break and saved their line of retreat along the Willis Church Road. Huger's advance was stopped on the Charles City Road. "Stonewall" Jackson's divisions were delayed by Franklin at White Oak Swamp.

Confederate Major General T.H. Holmes made a feeble attempt to turn the Union left flank at Turkey Bridge but was driven back by Federal Navy gunboats in James River.

Union generals Meade and Sumner and Confederate generals Anderson, Pender, and Featherston were wounded.

This was Lee's best chance to cut off the Union army from the James River.

That night, McClellan established a strong position on Malvern Hill.

Result(s): Inconclusive (Union withdrawal continued.)

Other Names: Nelson's Farm, Frayser's Farm, Charles City Crossroads, White Oak Swamp, New Market Road, Riddell's Shop

2219 # This is taken from the History of Grant Co., Indiana, and Biographical Sketches, page. 905-906.
William M. Kirkpatrick, one of the oldest and most highly esteemed pioneers of Van Buren Township, Grant Co., Indiana, is a native of Guernsey County, Ohio, where he was born January 08, 1811. The parents from whom he descended were Thomas B. and Mary (Henthorn) Kirkpatrick, natives of Ireland and Pennsylvania. The former, Thomas B. Kirkpatrick, was born in Ireland in May 1773. his father, Alexander Kirkpatrick, was also a native of Ireland, where he married a Miss Johnston, and always remained until death. They were the parents of six children, viz.: Margaret, Richard, William, Johnston, Christina, and Thomas B. father of our subject, the next to the eldest member of the family. He emigrated from Ireland to the United States in a very early day and settled in the State of Pennsylvania, where he was united in the year of 1800 to the above Mary, daughter of James and Nancy (Collins) Henthorn, who was a resident and also a native of Pennsylvania. In the year 1806 they moved to Guernsey County, Ohio, where he served as associate judge for several years, and afterward resided until death, which occurred in August 1852. Thirteen children were born to them, viz: Richard, Henry, James, Alexander, John, William M., Lucinda, Nancy, Margaret, Mary A., Thomas, Eliza and Fletcher W.

In the History of Guernsey County, Ohio, PP. 952-953:
"Five townships were laid off at the first meeting of the county commissioners, April 23, 1810. Present at the meeting were persons from various parts of the County, who were interested in the formations and their names. Amongst these were David Wherry, and Thomas B. Kirkpatrick, one of the associate judges, both of whom lived in the division that became Oxford Township. In deference to the wishes of these gentlemen the commissioners requested them to suggest a suitable name. "I came from Oxford shire, England," said David Wherry, "and I would like to have it called Oxford, in honor of my old home." "That suits me," added Judge Kirkpatrick, "because my ancestors came from Oxford, a little town in Ireland." Thus it is that Oxford has both an English and an Irish Origin.
