Myrtle Edna went to school in Dist #4, Haynes Twp., unti lthe 3rd grade. Then the family moved to Centralia Washington. That is all the schooling that Myrtle received. Myrtle claims that there was no love lost between she and her father, because he felt that she had killed her mother.

When she went out a few times with a young man in Centralia, her father took her and the young man to Chalalis, the County seat of Lewis Country, and forced them to marry.

Record of the marriage reads:
"Henrey Lewis haynes, age 18, White, 1st marriage, of Centralia, Wash, a baker, son of Joseph Lawrence, and Alice Hilton, married one Myrtle Edna Morton, age 16, 1st marriage, white, of Centralie Wash., born in Michigan, father John Johnson, maiden name of mother Erdine Morton, date of marriage July 19 ___ (not filled in), place of marriage, Centralia, Wash., performed by Robert J Reed, Witnesses John Johnson and Mrs. Laura Jordon - Certified March 1, 1971:Recorded Book 1:Page 140,bearing date,July 19__ (not filled in), filed July 20, 1909."

Note from Milo Johnson (1970):
When I, Milo N. Johnson, was born in February, 1890, there wasn't a cow milking in the community, when mother took sick and couldn't nurse me (this is her story to me), Mark Morton, Myrtle's grandfather, had a mare that had just had a colt, so they milked the mare, and divided between me and the colt until mother got better. A neighbor girl born in 1892 remembers Myrtle and went to school with her. She owns and lives in the house Morton built on his place, so I reckon Myrtle's early years are well documented, and the implication of the marraige to Henry Haines is disproved.

Henry L. Haines joined a unit of the US Services and was sent to a mission or project in alaska (which unit is not known). Myrtle followed him to Alaska and their baby was born up there-more than nine months after the marraige.

Myrtle got a job up there, I believe (Milo writing), in a lumber camp at or near Ketchikan, Alaska. When the baby came, I think the welfare dept. had the baby adopted out to someone and according to their rule, Myrtle couldn't find out until 18 years had passed. Henry came forward, though, and claimed Myrtle as his wife and the baby as his. He wasn't so bad after all. Myrtle's baby, Hazel ?____ Haines, born in Alaska, date?, Hazel's adopted parents?

Myrtle made her own living as a practical nurse and came to Bellingham, Wash., in 1923. When she heard where her daughter was, she worked her way back up there, I think (again from Milo), in British Columbia, contacted her and convinced her to come to Wash. to live. Hazel has two or three children now, some married. Hazel did not answer the inquiry made in 1970.

Myrtle married again, Henry Haines being dead or declared dead, as Myrtle said in 1970, "I get a small Vet's pension which pays for rent and pays for food if I am careful."

# Portrait of a Brother, Marian Johnson Merkel Shiffler
http://www.voiceinverse.com/family/portraitOfABrother.cfm
Page 4, partway down.

One huge benefit we derived from living in Harrisville was seeing Grandpa Teeple frequently. He came to town nearly every week, in a horse and buggy, or a cutter if there was snow. He had a big bearskin coat and hat with earflaps, and a horsehide robe for his lap. He carried white peppermints in his righthand pocket, pink wintergreens in his left. These candies were dispensed as medicine depending on the severity of one's cough. We got expert in getting the kind we wanted. He taught Gerald to play the jew's harp and the mouth organ, and taught us to sing funny songs, like

Ohhhhh, I'll never wear the red anymore, anymore.
I'll never wear the red, diddly dinkems O
Oh, I'll never wear the red, it's so pretty on the bed,
So come buy me a molly, dolly rhyme.
So come buy me a molly, dolly, dimple olly, sally olly
Chuka=chuka chuk giltaroy, didly dinkem O.

He also taught us to dance the jig, which Gerald could do well, and the highland fling which Mildred and I excelled at. One feat Grandpa had that I always intended to learn, but never did, was to pare an apple in one unbroken peeling that one could carefully hold to make it look like a whole apple.

We weren't the only kids that loved Grandpa Teeple. Every kid on our street ran beside his buggy or cutter to take a few yard turn at a ride, and listen to his songs. He was Santa Claus at the Presbyterian church on Christmas Eve. He didn't bother with Santa's suit, and we all knew who he was-who could miss that luxuriant walrus moustache?-but no one cared, and we all pretended with gusto.

It was great fun at his house, too. He had a record player. He also had a wonderful orchard, with delicious apples, a Wagner, a sweet crab, and a dark red with a dusting to make it look purple.

Grandpa had remarried by this time. Mama's mother, Eliza Hastings died in 1918 while Uncle Wilson was away at war, from grief, some said. Our new grandma was Black Bill Johnson's (already mentioned) widow. Grandpa got up every morning of his life at 4 a.m. to do his barn chores, and went to bed immediately after supper most nights. One morning he was at breakfast and died with a spoon of oatmeal halfway to his mouth. He was 75. Gerald was devastated. He couldn't seem to stop crying. Gerald was named after Grandpa, first name Frederick, But his age may have contributed to his lack of control because Fernall, same age as Gerald felt just as bad, and sobbed all through the funeral. Fernall was Wallace Teeple's oldest boy. He had bright red hair and a pointy face. He and Gerald were good friends.

...Gerald was enthralled by any type of music, be it piano, organ, violin, or even Grandpa Teeple's jewsharp.

..Peaches were bought by the bushel, and all other fruit and vegetables we got from Grandpa Teeple, Uncle Bill Hastings, the Cummings farm, or from the farmer who brought our weekly crock of butter, quart of cream (so thick it could be scooped out with a table knife) and eggs.

Alcona County Review Feb 18, 1932
Fred O. Teeple
The sudden death of Fred O. Teeple, Thursday, 11th at his home in Haynes Twp, came as a shock to the many friends and acquaintances in the county who have known and respected him over a long period of years, since 1870 to be exact, when he came to Alcona Village as a youth of 17.
Mr Teeple fell dead while eating his breakfast. He had been in his usual health and ha djust completed his morning chores before sitting down to breakfast. He was alone with Mrs. Teeple when he died without any warning at all.
Mr Teeple was born Jun 23, 1853 and came to Alcona County 70 years ago. He was married twice, first to Eliza Hastings Holden (??) who died in 1918, leaving 3 sons and 2 daughters, Earl of Birmingham, Wilson of Black River, Wallace of Sturgeon Point Coast Guards, and Mrs James Yuill of Duluth and Mrs Milo Johnson of Harrisville. His 2nd marriage was to Mrs Johnson who survives, with two brothers, Gilbert Teeple of Deckerville and Malcomb of Port Huron, and one sister, Mrs Mary A. Doan, also of Port Huron. Services were held at the home on Saturday afternoon in charge of Rev C S Brown. Burial in the family lot at Mt. Joy Cemetery.
